Good News Reflection

33 rd^ Sunday in Ordinary Time November 16, 2014

This Sunday's Gospel reading reminds us not to bury the gifts that God has given us. To do so is to be a "wicked, lazy servant!" Ouch. We all have at least one buried talent. There's more we could be doing for the kingdom of God, but we think: "Not me. I'm not gifted enough" or "Someone else can do it better than I can" or "God can't be

telling me to do that" or "I don't have the time, the financial

resources, the know-how, or good enough health" or "I'm retired now and I've been waiting a long time to finally focus on my own desires." There's no holy excuse for wasting anything good that God has given us, but sadly it happens quite often, because we don't realize how necessary our talents are for the Church and our joint mission of spreading Christ's influence upon the world. What's pushing your gifts and talents aside? What's interfering with your usefulness to the kingdom of God? Now is the time to open wide your potential and release your talents into God's plans! We are all gifted "enough" to make a difference for God's kingdom, because our abilities come from him. We're his servants, and it's up to him, not us, to decide what we're capable of doing. Even the homebound and the bedridden have a divine purpose that can be accomplished in their circumstances and sufferings. Often, these precious people are very powerful prayer warriors and have some of the soundest wisdom on earth. Have you ever been challenged by the question: "If God is so good, why does he allow evil to happen?" The answer is: It's not God that

allows it. It'swe who allow it! We are the Body of Christ on earth. We

are his hands and feet and vocal chords and embracing arms. Jesus truly wants to make our world more heavenly, but too many of us have seemingly good reasons to bury the gifts that could make a difference. Indeed, this is wicked laziness!

Questions for Personal Reflection: What good have you done? Hear God assuring you: "Well done, my good and faithful servant! Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you greater responsibilities. Come, share your Master's joy!" What "greater responsibilities" can you say yes to by offering the gifts that he's provided to you? What's stopping you from saying yes?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: How would you recommend, based on your own experiences, that Christians invest the gifts of God? How do you identify (1) your giftedness and (2) God's purpose for it?

Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Elizabeth of

Hungary

(1207-1231)

In her short life Elizabeth manifested such great love for the poor and suffering that she has become the patroness of Catholic charities and of the Secular Franciscan Order. The daughter of the King of Hungary, Elizabeth chose a life of penance and asceticism when a life of leisure and luxury could easily have been hers. This choice endeared her in the hearts of the common people throughout Europe. At the age of 14 Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia (a German principality), whom she deeply loved; she bore three children. Under the spiritual direction of a Franciscan friar, she led a life of prayer, sacrifice and service to the poor and sick. Seeking to become one with the poor, she wore simple clothing. Daily she would take bread to hundreds of the poorest in the land, who came to her gate. After six years of marriage, her husband died in the Crusades, and Elizabeth was grief-stricken. Her husband’s family looked upon her as squandering the royal purse, and mistreated her, finally throwing her out of the palace. The return of her husband’s allies from the Crusades resulted in her being reinstated, since her son was legal heir to the throne. In 1228, Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order, spending the remaining few years of her life caring for the poor in a hospital which she founded in honor of St. Francis. Elizabeth’s health declined, and she died before her 24 th^ birthday in 1231. Very soon after the death of Elizabeth, miracles were reported that happened at her grave in the church of the hospital, especially those of healing. On the suggestion of Konrad, and by papal command, examinations were held of those who had been healed between August, 1232, and January, 1235. The results of

those examinations was supplemented by a briefvita of

the saint-to-be, and together with the testimony of Elizabeth's handmaidens and proved sufficient reason for the quick canonization of Elizabeth on May 27, 1235 in Perugia—no doubt helped along by her family's power and influence.

In today's Gospel, Jesus talks about the correlation between faithfulness and responsibilities. Family life provides many opportunities to illustrate this connection for children. As children prove themselves trustworthy, they can be trusted to take on greater responsibilities. Jesus teaches us in this parable that when we show ourselves to be trustworthy in small matters, we can be trusted to participate in greater matters of responsibility. As you gather as a family, take some time to recall how each child in the family has matured and can now be trusted with greater responsibilities.

Say:In today's Gospel, Jesus talked about how our

trustworthiness in small matters shows that we can also

be trusted to share in the work of serving the Kingdom of

Heaven. Read Matthew 15:14-30. Say:We share in the

work of serving the Kingdom of Heaven when we use our

talents to help and serve others.

As a family, choose one thing to do this week to serve others. Conclude in prayer together, asking God's help so that your family may serve others more faithfully. Pray together the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Next Sunday New Lighthouse Catholic Media CD’s will be in! These are perfect stocking stuffers & Christmas gifts. They are inspiring and a great way to grow in our Catholic faith!

We ask a $3 offering for each CD, but if that’s not affordable, please contribute whatever you are able.

Also, any extra contributions to support this ministry would be very appreciated.

Thanksgiving Day
