EDUCATION

In sociology, education is viewed as a social institution. It is an

act of thinking critically.

UNESCO declares that education is fundamental human right

and essential for the exercise of all other human rights.

Further, education is a powerful tool by which economically

and socially marginalized adults and children can lift

themselves and of poverty and participate fully as citizens.

Generally, education can be classified into formal and non-

formal. But there is also what we call as informal.

2. NON – FORMAL EDUCATION

As a concept, non – formal education

emerged in response to the world crisis in

education identified by Philip H. Coombs in

1967, who argued that the formal education

systems have failed to address the changing

dynamics of the environment and the societies.

3. INFORMAL EDUCATION

This is sometimes referred to as Open Education.

Informal education is the type of knowledge that one

gains through several life experiences.

  1. Productive Citizenry

Educational system enables citizen to be

productive members of society, as they are

equipped with knowledge and skills that could

contribute to the development of their society’s

systems and institutions.

2. Self Actualization

Education develops one’s sense of self. As a huge

part of the discovery process of oneself. Education

encourages having the vision to become self-

actualize. Moreover, it enables one to see your

strengths and maintain them. It enables one to

determine weaknesses and adjust to them. This

helps one reach full potential and establish oneself

in a whole.
