1 Minhaj University Lahore BS English level program Elucidate the title significance of The Gift of Magi Discussion: The title" The Gift of the Magi" refers to the gifts brought by the three wise men following the birth of Jesus exactly as the gold, frankincense, and myrrh had deeper senses, the gifts that Jim and Della offered one another have a deeper meaning relating to the importance of their affection for one another. The wise men were the wise men that came to Bethlehem to give gifts to the baby Jesus. Sorting to the story, the wise men were wise folks. The gifts the wise men offered to Jesus must have been wise too ( as the narrator of" The Gift of the Magi" suggests at the end of the story). These gifts must have been the smartest, most stylish gifts anyone could have chosen. The significance of the title “The Gift of the Magi” is that Della and Jim are a couple who are both wise in paying off their gifts. They chose gifts for each other which would be useful for each one. Della and Jim are also wise in that they understand that the act of gift-giving involves love. Della vends her hair to buy a present for Jim, which shows her pure passion for Jim, and Jim vended his watch to buy a present for Della indicating his
2 endless love for Della. In the end, they learn what is really important in life, they learn that it's the spirit of love in which gifts are given that matters and not the gifts themselves. Conclusion: In the Gift of the Magi, the author O’ Henry refers to the original wise men (Magi), the three wise men who" constructed the art of giving Christmas presents." He contrasts the wisdom of these gift-givers with the idiocy of Jim and Della," who most unwisely offered for each other the topmost treasures of their house." He teaches us about the mastery of address told by love and how offering commodity significant that can have a huge bump on people. Which gifts are given that matter and not the gifts themselves?
