Energy forms matching Name_______________________hr_____
____1. Nuclear a. energy associated with moving objects or objects that could move later
____2. Gravitational b. energy from waves such as light, radio, x-rays
____3. Elastic c. energy associated with heat
____4. Chemical d. energy associated with moving electrons and magnetism
____5. Thermal e. energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
____6. Sound f. energy stored in chemical bonds
____7. Radiant/Light g. energy an object has because of its height above ground
____8. Electromagnetic h. energy associated with vibrating air particles wiggling your eardrum
____9. Mechanical i. energy stored in a stretched or pressed object
You have learned about the numerous FORMS of energy above. Using our list, you are going to put them into
2 main categories (potential or kinetic). This category (potential or kinetic) is called the TYPE.
Remember that all kinds of energy can be classified. It can be categorized into TYPE and FORM.
The two categories for TYPE are POTENTIAL or KINETIC.
What is potential energy?
This is energy that is saved for later. Potential energy is “stored energy” and
has the potential to cause movement/changes. It has the potential to move.
What is kinetic energy?
This is energy of motion. Kinetic energy is the kind of energy where something
is moving.

Directions
Circle Potential for all forms of energy you believe are examples of potential energy
Circle Kinetic for all forms of energy you believe are examples of kinetic energy
Explain why you classified them this way using either the word moving or stored
Form of Energy Explanation
1. Radiant Energy is
Potential or Kinetic because
_____________________________________________
2. Elastic Energy is
Potential or Kinetic because

Student Reading Page: Energy Name: ___________________________________Hr_______ Reading With Purpose

One of the greatest and most significant discoveries of science is that there is such a

“thing” called energy. You have heard of some of the many forms of energy: solar energy,

wind energy, or nuclear energy, but others may be new to you. All forms of energy are

measured in Joules (J) which is also known as a kilogram-meter squared per second

squared (kg·m^2 /s^2 ).

But what is energy? Energy is anything that can cause a change in the condition of matter.

Energy is conserved and can be measured too. In everyday language the word “conserve”

means “to save” or “to use less of”. In science, “conserve” has a different meaning. Energy

is conserved means that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted

from one form to another, or transferred from one system to another. Energy conservation

is one of the most fundamental and important laws of nature.

As we discuss energy, we will be keeping track of energy that is transferred in or out of a

system through a process or energy that is transformed from one form to another within a

system. Energy can be stored in a physical system. It can also be transferred from one

system to another or it can be transformed from one form to another within that system.

Think about the following questions as you read. Then return to these questions and answer them.

  1. Which unit is used to measure all forms of energy?

  2. What is energy?

  3. In science, what does it mean when we “conserve” energy?

  4. What 3 things can happen to energy in physics?

  5. Pick a lab station. What did you observe that supports there was energy at that station?
