Unit3: The Art Of Racing In The Rain Study Guides
Overall Directions: Students will read assigned chapters of the novel on their own, then come together in their
assigned groups to complete the study guides.
Students are expected to keep up with the readings on a daily basis. Since there is only a class set of novels allowing
them to be checked out will be difficult. Therefore, I encourage students to obtain a copy from home by either
checking a copy out from school and public libraries or purchasing a copy. (Used book stores usually have this novel
in for just a few dollars and public libraries occasionally have copies for donations of a dollar.)
Part 2: Section 2 (Chapters 40-49; pg. 225-268)

in the novel. Only one member of the group should submit the assignment. This assignment will be due at the end of
Part. This assignment will be due at the end of chapter 11.

1. Chapter 40 opens with Enzo wanting to do flips! Explain why this is?
He wants to do flips because Denny had gone to court and gained visitation rights. He was able to take her home that
day but mark had to take her back to the twins after the day had finished. But over all he was just happy that he got to
be with them both together.
2. Per Zoe’s perception, how has she contributed to the situation? For a child, how perceptive is she, and how does her
perception parallel that of Enzo’s?
She realizes that her grandparents are the reason as to why Denny can’t be with Zoe full time. Zoe over time can’t stand
living with her grandparent, so she makes it a big poin to let Denny know that she wants to go back home with him
instead. But then he tells her she can’t because of some problems.

  7. Chapter 40 opens with Enzo wanting to do flips! Explain why this is? He wants to do flips because Denny had gone to court and gained visitation rights. He was able to take her home that day but mark had to take her back to the twins after the day had finished. But over all he was just happy that he got to be with them both together.
  8. Per Zoe’s perception, how has she contributed to the situation? For a child, how perceptive is she, and how does her perception parallel that of Enzo’s? She realizes that her grandparents are the reason as to why Denny can’t be with Zoe full time. Zoe over time can’t stand living with her grandparent, so she makes it a big poin to let Denny know that she wants to go back home with him instead. But then he tells her she can’t because of some problems.
  1. On page 237, what does Enzo mean when he states, “…reaffirms my faith in the balance of the universe.”? Explain how this statement references humanity. Enzo thinks that with Denny gaining visitation rights that the universe will balance out. And that maybe Denny won’t have to face half as many hardships. Enzo thinks that soon enough, he,Denny, and Zoe will be back together. And that Denny won’t have to fight anymore.
  2. Explain the metaphor that Denny has “fresh tires and a full load of fuel”. (237) That he is willing to do anything to get his daughter back from the twins. No matter what, he knows that he did nothing wrong and that this should not have been happening. But he’s a fighter, and a winner.
  3. In another narrative pause Chapter 41 demonstrates Enzo reaffirming his belief in reincarnation. He cleverly discusses Luigi Chinetti; who is he, and how is he a symbolic metaphor? He shows that sometimes being a genius is hard work. That in order to live you have to work hard. Like how he worked hard for Ferrari to get him a dealership. So in order to achieve something you’ve gotta work hard and go through the hardships.
  4. Beyond the obvious, what does chapter 42 signify for both Zoe and Denny according to Enzo? It shows that his genetics were passed down. Zoe quite literally beat her father who is a great race car driver. This allows for Denny to understand that through all this chaos at least he still did good trying to raise her. And that he wasn’t a bad dad after.
  5. In chapter 43, Enzo openly acknowledges that people may be envious of him (dogs). Why? Is there truth in Enzo’s conclusion? Explain Enzo acknowledges that people may be envious of him because they see him as a dog that has no worries and can just enjoy life stress free. There is truth in Enzo’s conclusion because people walk by him and pet him. Enzo also says himself that in a way he does have it easier than humans because he does not have to pay bills or go through all the obstacles that he sees people go through on a daily basis.
  6. At the beginning of chapter 44, the reader’s suspicions are confirmed by Mark’s conversation with Denny. What does the reader now know? Is Mark doubting his ability? The readers know that Denny has it hard. It’s not getting any easier for them to have a chance in winning against Trish and Maxwell. Mark is doubting his ability because he starts to talk about how bad things are looking for Denny and that the best option right now is to agree to what Trish and Maxwell want so that all charges can drop and Denny will at least get time to see Zoe.
  1. Chapter 47 finds Enzo again in deep philosophical thought. What has he assessed? What are the group’s thoughts about Enzo’s conclusion to his situation? Agree? Disagree? Explain At the end of the chapter, Enzo determined that he still had work to do on Earth. His life wasn’t over until he finished doing what he was placed on Earth to do. Our group agrees with this claim because we never really realized this until we heard it out loud. It makes sense as to why people die in certain times.
  2. Thus far what does the reader know and infer are Enzo’s feelings about money? He knows it’s a lot by the way he reacted when he heard eight hundred. Other than that, Enzo hasn’t quite touched on it.
  3. Chapter 48, Enzo again may be easily seen as an unreliable narrator. He describes a very different side of Denny? What has led to this? Can the reader assess if what Enzo’s narrating is accurate? How? Explain Denny gave up towards the end of the chapter because he realized he didn’t have any money left on his cards. He told Enzo that “they won” because they drained him dry of his money. He couldn't afford to take care of Enzo, let alone have enough for gas. The narrator told the readers that Enzo is on drugs and is having a hard time recalling what he’s hearing. Although he hears a lot right now, it might not be 100 percent accurate.
  4. In the same chapter how does Enzo feel he has failed Denny? Are these feelings of Enzo due to the loyal nature of dogs? Support your answer. Since the doctors numbed Enzo, he couldn’t move any parts of his body. So when Denny was having a breakdown, he couldn’t bark or make gestures to Denny, showing that everything’s going to be alright. He felt helpless and felt as if he failed to be there for Denny. I believe these feelings are due to the loyalty dogs have because they’re accustomed to be there for their owner whenever they feel upset.According to Enzo, “I provided nothing. He was alone.” Goes to show that he had to prove something to Denny 23-28. Denny and Enzo are extremely depressed at the open of chapter 49. Upon their visit to Mike’s house, a souvenir pen brings Enzo an epiphany – the zebra is everywhere! What has become utterly clear to Enzo in that moment? Does each group member agree with Enzo’s new realization or disagree? Why? The zebra wasn’t something that we could see, it was a demon that was inside of us. The worst part of ourselves, the part that doesn’t seem to be recognized. Our group agrees with this realization because the zebra was brought up multiple times in the past, where the same situations were happening.
  5. From this realization, Enzo is determined to not fail Denny again. How is he finally able to communicate with Denny and what is the result? Enzo communicated with Denny with gestures; he got the custody papers that Denny signed and peed on them. He knew this wasn’t the Denny that he knew so he had to do something about it.
