INTRODUCTION WAGOLL:
Throughout Dickens’ allegorical, political diatribe, A Christmas
Carol, poverty is presented as the direct consequence of the
miserly upper class’ neglect, mistreatment and disregard of the
poor. Dickens does this to ‘raise the ghost of an idea’ with the
intention to ‘haunt’ his privileged readership, thus criticising their
decaying Christian, moral values in order to provoke change.
Although Dickens’ contemporary readership of upper-class
individuals in Victorian society would have found this far more
frightening than a desensitised modern readership, the message
still resonates: social responsibility and benevolence must prevail.
