  2. While pollution of land, sea, and air has been thoroughly documented, a newer and less recognized form of pollution is the rising tide of noise, which is affecting both urban and rural areas. This growing issue has long-term effects on the environment, public health, and productivity, particularly in a fast-developing nation like India.
  3. Unlike other forms of pollution, noise is invisible and often goes unnoticed, dismissed as a minor annoyance. However, data shows that noise pollution poses serious threats, causing various complications. In some industries, reduced worker productivity has been directly linked to constant exposure to high noise levels.
  4. A pioneering survey by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on noise’s impact on health has shown that noise disrupts both physical and psychological functions. It has been associated with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, pain, hypertension, and cardiovascular problems.
  5. A study from the Post Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences in Chennai supports these findings. It found that in half of the industries studied, workers exposed to higher noise levels became more irritable, short-tempered, and impatient, often leading to unrest and disruption of production. This was observed in major industrial areas surrounding the four metropolitan cities.
  6. Another concerning aspect is recreational noise, which is becoming more widespread in cities and towns. Loudspeakers are frequently used at full volume during events like weddings, festivals, and musical programs, particularly at night, with little consideration for others. Even a sound level of 50 decibels can wake someone from deep sleep. Experiments have shown that loudspeakers producing sound between 60 and 80 decibels

These areas also demonstrated more resilience to environmental changes, such as droughts and pest invasions.
  3. It was noted that around 70% of traditional farming practices across the globe are found in regions where communities have lived in harmony with nature for generations. These methods often involve crop rotation, agroforestry, and the use of natural fertilizers.
  4. On the other hand, only about 20% of modern, intensive farming regions reported similar levels of biodiversity, highlighting the negative impact of monocultures and chemical fertilizers on local ecosystems. However, around 10% of modern farms are beginning to adopt sustainable practices, attempting to restore balance to the environment.
  5. Among the traditional farming communities, approximately 60% of the species diversity comes from multi-cropping systems, where farmers grow various crops on the same land. Another 30% stems from the preservation of native flora and fauna. The remaining 10% of biodiversity is attributed to organic farming techniques that avoid the use of synthetic chemicals.
  6. Further research into how traditional knowledge can be integrated with modern farming techniques is essential. This will not only enhance biodiversity but also ensure food security and sustainable agricultural practices for future generations.
