Exploring the Effectiveness of Natural Filters: Banana Peels, Lagundi, and Ginger Vinegar, Slides of Environmental science

The title defense presentations of a grade 12 ola (stem) group consisting of patrick benedict a. Robiene, juliane eurice n. Lobina, joemar a. Inciso, and jcap b. Apelado. The group presents three research titles: (1) the efficacy of banana peels as water filters, (2) the larvicidal efficacy of lagundi against mosquito larvae, and (3) the use of ginger and vinegar as an organic insecticide. The scientific basis, relevance, and nature of variables for each title are discussed.

PART I – PRESENTATION
PATRICK: Introduction…
JULIANE: Opening Prayer
PATRICK: Presentation of first title (a. relevance and b. nature of variables)
JULIANE: Presentation of second title (a. relevance and b. nature of variables)
JOEMAR: Presentation of third title (a. relevance and b. nature of variables)
PART II – TITLE PROPOSAL
PATRICK:
1. Efficacy of banana peels (Musa accuminata colla) as water filter.
Q: What is the scientific basis for choosing banana peel as water filter?
Bananas may be tasty, but their peels definitely aren't useless: they've been proven to
have the ability to purify drinking water. Banana peels can be used to purify drinking
water contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as copper and lead, according to a
study. The banana peels can outperform even conventional purifiers such as aluminium
oxide, cellulose and silica.
Q: How do you come up with this study/title?
We came up with this study to develop a better drinking water, more purified and
cleaner. And with this study we want to know if banana peel is really effective in filtering
water.
+
JOEMAR:
2. Lagundi (Vitex Negundo Linn) larvicidal efficacy against mosquito larvae.
Q: What is the scientific basis for choosing lagundi (vitex negundo linn) as larvicidal agent
against mosquito larvae?
Lagundi or (Vitex Negundo linn). Lagundi leaf extracts possess larvicidal activity against
the larvae of mosquito and could be a possible source of mosquito larvicides.

1. Efficacy of banana peels (Musa accuminata colla) as water filter. Q: What is the scientific basis for choosing banana peel as water filter?  Bananas may be tasty, but their peels definitely aren't useless: they've been proven to have the ability to purify drinking water. Banana peels can be used to purify drinking water contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as copper and lead, according to a study. The banana peels can outperform even conventional purifiers such as aluminium oxide, cellulose and silica. Q: How do you come up with this study/title?  We came up with this study to develop a better drinking water, more purified and cleaner. And with this study we want to know if banana peel is really effective in filtering water. + **JOEMAR:

  1. Lagundi (Vitex Negundo Linn) larvicidal efficacy against mosquito larvae.** Q: What is the scientific basis for choosing lagundi (vitex negundo linn) as larvicidal agent against mosquito larvae?  Lagundi or (Vitex Negundo linn). Lagundi leaf extracts possess larvicidal activity against the larvae of mosquito and could be a possible source of mosquito larvicides.

Q: How do you come up with this study/title?  Mosquitoes have been a constant problem in the community as they continuously transmit serious diseases. The dengue virus is one of the major diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, thus we created this in an effort to manage it. And with this study we want to know if lagundi does eliminate larvae of mosquitoes using Vitex negundo Linn, ethanol leaf extracts.

JULIANE:

3. Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) and vinegar as an organic insecticide. Q: What is the scientific basis for choosing ginger (Zingiber officinale) and vinegar as an organic insecticide?  Because of its zingiberene content of garlic and mild acidic content of vinegar it possible that the repellent activity of ginger and vinegar blends could be used as control agents against insects. Q: How do you come up with this study/title?  Insects can transmit over 65 diseases to humans. We came up with this study to help everyone avoid those infectious diseases that is transmitted by insects. Ginger and vinegar, two natural and environmentally beneficial ingredients, will be used to make this insecticide. And with this study we want to know if it is really effective organic insecticide. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Quantitative Research: Aliaga and Gunderson (2000), describe quantitative research as "explaining phenomena by collecting numerical data that are analyzed using mathematically-based methods (in particular statistics). Experimental: is the most appropriate method for testing cause-and-effect relationships. Experimental research involves observation for a scientific purpose, usually to test cause-and-effect relationships between variables under conditions which, as far as possible, are controlled by the researcher. It involves the use of scientific observation, but more than observation, it involves the manipulation and control of phenomena. Scientific basis: means empirical data (based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic) or other scientific findings, conclusions, or assumptions used as the justification for a rule, regulatory guidance, or a regulatory tool. Relevance: the quality or state of being closely connected or appropriate. Nature of Variables: The main purpose of research is to solve problems and improve the life of the people. To research is to search or investigate exhaustively. It is a careful or diligent search, studious inquiry or examination especially investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws, it can also be the collection of information about a particular subject, Webster (1985). Research cannot be possible without taking into consideration measurable factors that are subject to change due to circumstances. Anything that can vary in research due to circumstances is called a variable. A variable is an object, event, idea, feeling, time period, or any other type of category you are trying to measure. There are so many variables in research that it could be impossible or extremely difficult to account for all of them due to the fact that what can be considered a variable in one study may not necessarily be a variable in another study.
