An epoxy flooring system is a multi-layer coating applied over concrete to create a durable, seamless, and chemical-resistant surface. Itโs widely used in industries, warehouses, hospitals, parking areas, and commercial buildings.
Epoxy flooring is made by mixing resin + hardener, forming a rigid plastic material that bonds strongly to concrete.
๐งฑ a) Surface Preparation (Most Important Step) โ โ Mechanical grinding / shot blastingRemove dust, oil, laitance โ โ Repair cracks with epoxy mortarMoisture check Poor preparation = coating failure
๐งด b) Primer Coat โ โ LowPenetrates concrete and improves adhesion-viscosity epoxy primer โ Coverage: ~5โ8 mยฒ/L ๐๏ธ c) Base Coat / Screed (if required) โ โ Epoxy mixed with silica sandUsed to level uneven surfaces โ Thickness: 1โ3 mm (or more for heavy-duty) ๐จ d) Intermediate Coat โ โ Builds thicknessEnhances strength and durability โ Can include quartz sand for anti-slip โจ e) Top Coat (Final Finish) โ Provides: โ Gloss / matte finish โ โ Chemical resistanceAbrasion resistance โ Options: โ Self-leveling epoxy โ โ AntiUV-resistant polyurethane (PU) top coat-slip coating
โ Self-Leveling Epoxy โ โ Smooth, seamlessUsed in hospitals, pharma
Hereโs a clear, practical guide to the epoxy flooring installation method used in construction and industrial flooring:
Proper preparation ensures strong bonding. โ โ Cleaning: Remove dust, oil, grease, laitance, and contaminants.Mechanical preparation: Use grinding, shot blasting, or scarifying. โ โ Crack repair: Fill cracks with epoxy crack filler or mortar.Moisture check: Surface must be dry (moisture < 5% typically). Poor surface prep = coating failure
Primer improves adhesion between concrete and epoxy. โ โ Apply epoxy primer using roller or brush.Allow it to penetrate into the substrate. โ Typical curing time: 6โ12 hours.
Epoxy usually comes in two components: โ โ Resin (Part A)Hardener (Part B)
Mixing process: โ โ Mix in manufacturerโs ratio (e.g., 2:1 or 3:1).Use a slow-speed drill mixer (300โ500 rpm). โ Mix for 2โ3 minutes until uniform. Only mix what you can use within pot life (20โ40 minutes).
โ โ PSpread using notched trowel or squeegee.our mixed epoxy onto floor.
โ Typical thickness: 1โ3 mm. Optional: โ Broadcast silica sand for anti-slip finish.
โ โ Applied for thicker systems or leveling.Helps improve durability and smoothness.
โ โ Apply using roller.Provides: โ โ Gloss/matte finishChemical resistance โ Wear resistance
โ โ Light foot traffic: 24 hoursHeavy traffic: 3โ7 days โ Full chemical cure: ~7 days Important Precautions โ โ Temperature: Ideal 10ยฐCHumidity: < 80% โ30ยฐC โ โ Ensure good ventilationUse PPE (gloves, mask)

โ โ High humidity โ amine blush (waxy surface)Low temperature โ slow curing or incomplete hardening โ โ High temperature โ fast setting, difficult applicationDust in air โ surface contamination
โ โ Soft or sticky floor โ improper curingCracking โ rapid drying or thick application โ Discoloration โ UV exposure or wrong mixing
โ โ Cracks reflecting through epoxyWear and abrasion failure in high-traffic areas โ Chemical attack if wrong epoxy type used
โ โ Color variationGloss inconsistency โ Fish eyes (small circular defects)
โ โ Ensure proper surface preparation (grinding + cleaning)Check moisture content (<4โ5%) before application โ โ Follow correct mixing ratio strictlyMaintain site temperature (15โ30ยฐC ideal) โ โ Use experienced applicatorsApply primer + base coat + top coat system properly
Sika Floor Epoxy Flooring System (commonly known as Sikafloor system ) is a high-performance, seamless floor coating applied on concrete surfaces to provide durability, chemical resistance, and an easy-to-clean finish.
It is a multi-layer resin-based system made from epoxy materials that forms a strong, protective, and decorative surface over concrete floors. It is widely used in industrial and commercial environments. Typical System Structure A standard Sika epoxy flooring system includes:
1. Primer Layer โ โ Improves adhesion with the concrete substrateExample: Sikafloorยฎ- 161
โ โ Industrial floors and factoriesWarehouses โ โ Car parking and garagesHospitals and pharmaceutical facilities โ โ Food processing areasCommercial showrooms
โ โ Light duty: 0.5Medium duty: 1โ1 mmโ2 mm โ Heavy duty: 2โ4 mm
The Sika epoxy flooring system is a durable, chemical-resistant, and seamless flooring solution that can be customized based on the project requirements, making it ideal for both industrial and commercial use.
