REDUCING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC POLLUTION :

ROLE OF YOUTH

' PLASTIC will be the ma in ingredient of all our grandchildren's recipes', said Anthony T

Hincks. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. India produces

approximately 24,900 tons of plastic waste every day. Humanity's relationship with plastic is rather schizophrenic. It 's present in almost every aspect of modern life, from water bottle s to aeroplanes. Yet, it' s the biggest environmental ev il. The Indian Ocean, the pride of India, is now the biggest dumping ground for plastic waste. In such a scenario, can we truly dream of 'freeing' the country from single-use plastic? But what is single-use plastic? Is it something which we rarely use or is it the necessity of every household? Single-use plastic is the disposable plastic that we don't think twice before throwing. Articles like- straws, carry bags, bottles, containers are all part of this man-made calamity. Items that start our day are ending our own planet. Si ngle-u se plastic is n ot only har mful to our environment but also is a death -causing agent for animals. It ca n pierce t h eir organs or choke their digestive tract and cause their death. Globally, 100,000 marine mammals die every year as a result of plastic pollution.

Being a versatile and highly durable product wit h low cost, plastic is one of the main reasons for climate change. The use of plastic is creating an envi ronmental crisis due to its pollution. 34.33% of India's total population is youth. From our history and even nowadays scenar io , one thing is clear that youth is the key to any revolution. And seeing the situation created by plastic usage, our youth has to come forward and take the charge to create a plastic-free world. Suman Chowdhury, a 23-year-old business graduate, is the president and founder of Plastic Initiative Network. This organisation is working to ensure proper recycl ing and reu si ng of plastic. On the 30 th^ of June 2020, 1,900 young people joined together at the Virtual Youth

Summit in India to celebrate their completion of the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge in India.

This competition was organised by Uni t ed Nations Environmen t Progr amme' s (UNEP) Clean sea campaign. This was organised to creat e awareness about plastic pollution. "W e will only be able to turn the tide on plastic p ollu t io n if we change our habits and use our voice to

influence change. Yo ut h leaders hip ca n lead to bro ader change across societ ies and is t he so lut ion fo r plastic eradication ", says Sam Barratt , Chi ef of U NEP 's Youth , Education a nd Ad vocacy Un it. Plastic Waste Management banned the use of plastic bags below 50 microns' thickne ss all over the country due to continuous prote st s done by the youth. Bo yan Sl at, at the age of 18 , founded the Ocean Cleanup. This organisation develops te chnology to extract plastic pollut ion from the oceans and intercept it in rivers before it can reach i nto the ocean.

With the spread of awareness in o ur count ry, p eople are realising the effects of single-use plastic. Slowly but su rely, peo p le are recognising the environmental pollution caused by plastic and are putt i ng in efforts in eradicating its usage from our environment. Youth has played a major role in this revolutio n. Sumon Ch owdhury, Dut chman Dave Hakkens, Boyan Slat are a part of our society. The difference between them and us is that they under stood the need of the hour and worked for a better and safer env i ronment whereas we are still no t attent ive and are sti ll using plastic as a way of life. We should take them as ex ampl es and our role model s. Small changes make a big difference. Steps taken by us today can make our futur e secure. The step s can vary from not u si ng straws, givi ng up gum , using

boxes instead of bott le s, using reusable bags to pa r ticipating in drive s regardi ng plastic pollution. Our every step count s. With t he powe r of Social media, our one post can lead to a big change. Turn i ng a blind eye towa rds single-use plastic is not going to solve the issue of environmental pollut ion. We don ' t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people do ing it impe rfe ct ly. We may not be able to bui ld up organisations but we can encourage their work.

There is no such th i ng as 'away '. When we throw anything away, it must go somewhere. Our

work is to reduce our usage of plastic because only then we would be able to repay our debt to nature. We hav e to be a part of the solution and not a part of po ll ut ion. And as Sadhguru said, " The proble m is no t plastic it self. The prob lem is it s ir respons ibl e usage. Time fo r an una mb iguous policy to elim inate s in gle-u se plast ic." It 's tim e w e take our responsib ility as y outh and make our p lanet a sa fe pl ace.
