Foundry Tools and Equipments Nee SS SSS 1. Introduction. 2. Foundry Tools and Equipments. 3. Foundry Hand Tools. 4. Moulding Boxes (Flasks). 5. Moulding Machines 6. Melting Equipment. 7. Pouring Equipment. a ————— 41-1 Introduction A foundry is a place where castings are produced. The casting is a process of pouring molten metal into a mould and allowing it to solidify. By this process, intricate parts can be given strength and rigidity which is not frequently obtainable by any other method. The mould or cavity into which the material is poured is made of some heat-resisting material. Sand is widely used, as it can be readily packed to shape and resists high temperatures. Though all the metals can be cast, but cast iron is widely used for casting. This is due to the fact that in casting with this metal, it is possible to have easy control on its properties which include fluidity, rate of shrinkage, strength and rigidity. The shape of the object is determined by the shape of the mould cavity. 11:2 Foundry Tools and Equipments The foundry tools and equipments are divided into the following five groups : Hand tools, Moulding boxes (Flasks), Moulding machines, Melting equipment, and Vv Pwno . Pouring equipment. We shall now discuss these tools and equipments, in detail, in the following pages. 11-3 Foundry Hand Tools The hand tools commonly employed in preparing the mould in foundry are as follows : 1. Shovel. A shovel, as shown in Fig: 11.1, consists of a square pan fitted with a wooden handle. It is used for mixing and for moving the sand from one place to another in the foundry. Mesh Wooden handle Pan Frame Fig. 11.1. Shovel. Fig. 11.2. Riddle. 2. Riddle. A riddle, as shown in Fig. 11.2, has a standard wire mesh fixed into‘a circular or square wooden frame. It is used for cleaning the moulding sand. The riddles are specified by the diameter of the frame and the mesh number. When large volumes of sand are to be cleaned, then Power operated riddles are used. , 012 Scanned with CamScanner
