He was a naturalist____________________________________ and wanted to learn about the living things in
the world.
The diverse animals and plants he saw lead him to create the __theory of Evolution by natural
selection____________________________________
Darwin’s Observations
He stopped in South America, and then went to the Galapagos Islands_____________ ______

Evolution Notes Darwin’s Theory

  • __Charles Darwin_____________________ (English) set sail around the world on the HMS Beagle _______________ in December 1831.
  • He was a naturalist____________________________________ and wanted to learn about the living things in the world.
  • The diverse animals and plants he saw lead him to create the __theory of Evolution by natural selection____________________________________ Darwin’s Observations  He stopped in South America, and then went to the Galapagos Islands_____________ ______
    • He observed these three pieces of evidence to form his hypothesis:
      1. The _diversity of living things
      2. The _fossilized_______ remains of ancient organisms
      3. Characteristics of life on the _Galapagos Islands______ ______ compared to the rest of the world. Comparing the characteristics of the organisms on the Galapagos Islands to the South American organisms
  • Many birds and plants on the islands were like those on the mainland.
  • Iguanas_____________ on the island____________ had __larger claws________________ to grip rocks. Iguanas_____________ on mainland__________________ had smaller claws___________________ to climb trees.
  • Darwin hypothesized that a small number of animals were blown_____ or drifted_____ from the mainland to the islands.
  • Then those animals___________________ reproduced and slowly become different_____________________________ from their mainland relatives. Examples of Comparisons Among the Island Organisms
  • Differences in finches’ beaks. o Finches that ate worms_____ had slender________ beaks o Finches that ate seeds_______ had strong____, wide_____ beaks
  • Adaptation: an inheritable_________ trait that increases an organism’s _fitness_____ in their environment.
  • Fitness : how well an organism’s _trait__allows it to survive______ and reproduce______ in its _enviorment____ Evolution
  • Darwin returned to England and spent 20 years analyzing his findings.
  • Darwin reasoned that organisms on the island faced conditions that were different____________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________ from those on the mainland.
  • Therefore, _the species gradually changed over time to adapt to their new enviiorment______________________________________________________________________. This is called _evolution______________. Theory of Evolution
  • Scientific Theory - a well tested concept that explains a wide _________ of observations
  • Darwin wasn’t sure how to explain his theory, so he studied selective breeding________ ____________
    • He studied how English sheep were slowly bred over time to have fine wool, which was directed by human activity.
    • Selective Breeding : when humans influence the traits a species has through breeding processes Natural Selection
  • Darwin published his findings in a book entitled the Origin of Species _______________________________________ (1858).
  • Darwin explained that evolution occurs with natural selection_evolution occurs by natural selection.______________________________________________________________
  • Natural Selection - the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species. Factors of Natural Selection
  • Overproduction - species will often produce more offspring_than can survive____ _______
  • Variation - differences _________ between members of the same species
  • Competition - food and resources are limited, so members of a species must fight or out with others to survive Natural Selection
  • Darwin proposed that over a _long ____ period, _of time natural selecting_____ _______ can lead to change.
  • Helpful varations______ accumulate in a population, while unfavorable ones disappear_______ Genes and Natural Selection
  • Darwin did not know how these changes came about.
  • Scientists later discovered that changes occur because of mutations________ in genes.
