Petrona De La Cruz Cruz’s, A Desperate Woman, portrays men’s violence against
women in the Tzotzil community. In this community, women are the caretakers for the young
and want to ensure their family’s physical survival. Without the help of FOMMA, many people
would not know about the realities that women in indigenous communities face. The themes of
abuse and treatment of women are important in analyzing the country’s history at the time.
