The process of enhancing the mechanical properties of aluminum-cu alloys through heat treatment and the microstructural changes involved. Additionally, it discusses another method for strengthening al alloys and introduces the concepts of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, toughness, and stiffness, explaining how to determine these properties through a tensile test and hardness test.

Don't miss anything!

(a) Aluminum alloy is widely used due to its low density, good strength and high corrosion resistance. For mechanical properties enhancement, it can be strengthen by various methods.
(i) With the aid of sketches, describe the common heat treatment process used to enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Cu alloy. (ii) Draw the expected microstructures and mechanical properties at each stage of the heat treatment process. Apart from heat treatment, discuss another method which can be used to strengthen this Al alloys
(b) Differentiate between cold work and hot work and discuss the microstructure and mechanical properties changes for both processes.
Chapter 5
(a) Briefly explain the definition for the following mechanical properties;
i) Yield strength ii) UTS iii) Ductility iv) Toughness v) Stiffness’
b) Explain how to conduct the tensile test and explain how to determine the following mechanical properties in (a) based on the results from the conducted tensile test.
(c) Define a hardness and Briefly explain how the hardness test is carried out.
