Title: Fabrication
Objectives:
a) To produce a product based on the given metal sheet.
b) To study the process of fabrication on a sheet of metal.
c) To learn practically on how to use the equipment safely and with the
correct way.
Introduction And Theory
Fabrication is a fabricated product where a piece or sheet of metal will went through a
few type of processes such as cutting, bending and assembling. The fabrication of
metal usually starts with a precise dimensions and specifics drawing of the planned
product so that it will provides a clear instruction on how to produce the product.
In this fabrication workshop, the students are required to build a multipurpose
tray from a piece of metal sheet. There are several items that are needed to build this
product which will be explained later.
First, a piece of metal sheet with a dimension of 370mm X 330 mm is given to the
students which is a necessary item to produce the product. metal sheet such as
aluminium and galvanized sheet are widely used in commercial products because of
its properties which are ductile, light, and does not rust easily compared to other
metals. A lot of new tools are introduced to the students to assist them in completing
this project such as scriber, aviation snips, centre punch and so on. This hand tools are
very important in marking and cutting processes.

Introduction And Theory Fabrication is a fabricated product where a piece or sheet of metal will went through a few type of processes such as cutting, bending and assembling. The fabrication of metal usually starts with a precise dimensions and specifics drawing of the planned product so that it will provides a clear instruction on how to produce the product. In this fabrication workshop, the students are required to build a multipurpose tray from a piece of metal sheet. There are several items that are needed to build this product which will be explained later. First, a piece of metal sheet with a dimension of 370mm X 330 mm is given to the students which is a necessary item to produce the product. metal sheet such as aluminium and galvanized sheet are widely used in commercial products because of its properties which are ductile, light, and does not rust easily compared to other metals. A lot of new tools are introduced to the students to assist them in completing this project such as scriber, aviation snips, centre punch and so on. This hand tools are very important in marking and cutting processes.

Figure 1: The specifics planned and dimension of the fabrication

  1. Scriber -A tool that is needed to mark the area that are going to be cut off.
  2. Metal ruler -Use to measure the dimensions of the project correctly according to the drawing.
  3. Centre punch -Makes an indentation so that a hole can be created easily using the bench drill.

Procedure in fabrication

  1. The drawing of the product were reviewed to understand its dimensions, properties and shaped of the product.
  2. After that, the metal sheet were marked using a scriber and a metal ruler. The dimensions of the project should be the same with the drawing to avoid any error occurs during assembling the project.
  3. Then, the metal sheet was cut according to the marked line using an aviation snips.
  4. A centre punch is used to makes indentation as the mark for holes on the project.
  5. The metal sheet was bended according to the drawing until its shape can be seen likes a tray. The sides of the metal sheet are clamped to avoid any unwanted accident happened during workshop is in progress.
  6. The bench drilling machine are used to make 6 holes onto the previous marked indentation makes by the centre punch. A wood block are placed under the intended indentation so that the holes will be more accurate.
  7. The tray are going to be rivet using a pop rivet gun to join the thin pieces of metal through the holes that were drilled by the drilling machine.
  8. Before finishing up the project, make sure there are no flaw left on the tray. If there are some dented places, use the anvil and the hammer to make the dented places disappeared.

Safety precaution is one of the most important factor when doing a workshop that required the students to use sharp tools and machines to avoid any unwanted accident that may causes harmful things to the body. Wear a pair of gloves when handling the metal sheet because its sides are quiet sharp which will cut the hands if it is not handled properly. Furthermore, make sure the place is not messy and place sharp items far from the workplace to avoid hazardous things happen to the body. Lastly, Wear a goggle when using the bench drilling machine to avoid any projectiles going into the eyes. Result

Conclusions At the end of this workshop, we have learned a lot of thing about fabrication of metal some of it were its processes as we experience it by practically learn and use the tools and machines to complete the project which is to build a tray from a piece of metal sheet. We are taught to handle the tools with care because it can still harm our bodies if it is not handle safely. There are some problems that occurs during the fabrication process but thankfully we managed to complete the project. References:
