- Being a member of a team
- Serving on a project team for an academic class
- Holding a job – working for someone else
- Your new role as Freshman at The Citadel will bring this notion of being a follower to a whole new level!

Fourth Class System – What is it?
- It is a system of requirements, traditional
behaviors, duties, and expectations designed to promote this concept of followership.
- Governed by Cadet Regulations, “The Blue
Book,” the Fourth Class System is one of the foundational aspects of The Citadel Experience.
Principles of the Fourth
Class System
- All cadets will be treated with dignity and respect.
- All cadets, regardless of class, will accept personal responsibility for the fair, equitable, proper, and effective operation of the system.
- All cadets will implement the system in such a manner as to support each cadet's opportunity to achieve academic, military, physical, and moral-ethical excellence.
- No cadet will put another cadet in a position where he or she must compromise Citadel Core Values or disregard prescribed rules, regulations, or standards. - Source: The Blue Book, Chapter 3

- To remove wealth and former station as factors in the development of new cadets.

- To develop personal character and create a foundation for honorable and ethical decision-making.
BEWARE of moral temptations associated with cutting corners, being a Spotlight Ranger, and misaligned loyalties.

- To instill new cadets with self-discipline.
- To physically challenge new cadets and establish a foundation of understanding the necessity of physical fitness for life.
- To instruct new cadets in time management.
- To prepare new cadets for academic achievement.
- To inculcate class cohesion in support of The Citadel Mission and the development of Principled Leaders.
