Fragments

  • A group of words incorrectly punctuated as a sentence.
  • Fragments express incomplete thoughts.
  • A fragment may be missing a subject, verb, or both.

Ways to fix fragments

    1. Add the missing subject, verb, or other words to make the group of words a complete thought.
    1. Eliminate the word that makes the fragment sound incomplete

What is a run-­‐on sentence?

  • A run on sentence has two independent clauses that are not properly connected and they RUN into each other.
  • An independent clause is a sentence which can stand on its own.
  • When you have two independent clauses in a sentence, you need a conjunction and a comma to connect them.

A run on sentence has nothing to do

with the length of the sentence.

  • The sun is strong put on sunblock.
  • You can fix this sentence in three ways:
    1. Use a period to fix the sentence.
    1. Use a semi-­‐colon to fix the sentence. (very fancy)
    1. Add a comma and a conjunction to the sentence

  • I am a teacher I love snow days.
  • Snow days are fun I hate to shovel
  • Shoveling is great exercise it burns a lot of calories.
  • We make homemade pizza every Sunday.
  • Pizza is my favorite food I get heartburn.
  • Heartburn is awful I take TUMS.
  • TUMS has calcium it is important for bones.
  • Dogs love to eat bones.
  • I am a teacher. I love snow days.
