Frequency Distribution Using Excel
This tutorial will demonstrate how to use Excel to calculate frequency distribution
probabilities.
The background information for the spreadsheet is noted below:
The above spreadsheet contains the frequency distributions. You are given the number
of each of the various-sized fasteners in the container: 1-inch (651), 2-inch (243), 3-inch
(41), 4-inch (451), and 5-inch (333). There are a total of 1,719 fasteners in the
container.

Frequency Distribution Using Excel

This tutorial will demonstrate how to use Excel to calculate frequency distribution probabilities.

The background information for the spreadsheet is noted below:

The above spreadsheet contains the frequency distributions. You are given the number of each of the various-sized fasteners in the container: 1-inch (651), 2-inch (243), 3-inch (41), 4-inch (451), and 5-inch (333). There are a total of 1,719 fasteners in the container.

To find the probability of a 4-inch fastener (see Row 11), select cell E11 and just type the equal sign, click on the cell B7 (the number of 4-inch fasteners) and divide that by cell B9. The resulting formula entered in cell E11 will be =B7/B9. Hit the Enter key or click the checkmark icon once the formula is correctly typed. That gives you a probability of .262362, which will be rounded off to .262.

Finally, you want to calculate the probability of drawing a 3-inch or less sized fastener from the bucket. What you will do is take the sum of all of the 1-, 2-, and 3-inch fasteners and divide that by the total. To do so, select cell G15 and type in the equal sign, then SUM, open parenthesis, then click on and highlight cells B4, 5, and 6, release the mouse button, enter a closed parenthesis, and then divide by the total ( B9 ). The resulting formula entered in cell G15 will be =SUM(B4:B6)/B9. Hit the Enter key or click the checkmark icon once the formula is correctly typed. That gives you 0.543921 or rounding off to 0.544.
