Funeral Director - Answers-Properly licensed person, engaged in conducting or holding
himself out as being engaged in 1. preparing other than embalming of dead human
bodies 2. Maintaining or operating a funeral establishment for the preparation &
disposition or for the care of dead human bodies
Embalmer - Answers-Properly licensed person who disinfects, preserves or restores a
dead human body
Morgue - Answers-Place where the dead human bodies are kept until identified or
released for final disposition
Pre-Need - Answers-Funeral arrangement made in advance of need
- Some states, only licensed FD can actually make arrangements. Other states like FL
allow FD or unlicensed persons aka pre-need sale agents to make arrangements
Aftercare - Answers-- Offering services, literature or emotional support to the bereaved
after funeral is over; as a means to help them adjust to their loss
- traditionally accomplished by the FD making follow up call to the family, though the
trend is now to hire a person who is trained in grief counseling to coordinate aftercare
At- Need - Answers-In all states, except Colorado, a person must be a licensed FD or
Embalmer to meet with families at the time the death occurs

  • Master Trusts- accounts where money from numerous individuals, maybe numerous FH are placed into 1 account to provide a greater rate of return on the investment, though the balance for each account is kept separate Burial/Death Insurance - Answers-- Burial or Death Insurance- not commonly used today, was one of the first forms of prefunding. Decedent would take policy on himself with two provisions. 1 name FH as beneficiary and 2 make policy unable to be cancelled. Policy would be in effect as long as decedent made regular payments Life Insurance - Answers-- many people have today and believe it to be the source of funding for pre-planned funerals
  • proceeds from the policy are paid to a beneficiary who is not the FH and the beneficiary is not required to pay for the funeral with the money. Therefore cannot be used unless bene signs insurance assignment form
  • Not a good source of prefunding from the FH perspective Alternative Trusts - Answers-in some states, FH can invest the money paid to them for pre-need into accounts of their choosing provided FH keeps interest earned by each account separate Joint Bank Accounts - Answers-- was a historical method of prefunding
