GENERAL SCIENCE - BIOLOGY
(ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY MODE)
Topics: Unifying Themes of Life and Levels of Biological Organization
Prepared by: Patricia S. Lacson, LPT
Grade Level: 11
Subject: General Science - Biology
Time Allotment: 2 Days (November 6 & 7, 2025)
Overview
Life on Earth is diverse and complex, yet all living things share unifying
characteristics and levels of organization that make them part of one
interconnected system. This module will help you understand how biological
themes link all forms of life and how these forms are organized — from the
smallest atom to the vast biosphere.
Learning Competencies
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Identify and explain the unifying themes of life.
Describe the levels of biological organization from simplest to most complex.
Illustrate the relationship between these two concepts through a creative
diagram.
Lesson 1: Unifying Themes of Life
Life can be better understood through recurring ideas called unifying
themes. These explain how organisms interact, grow, reproduce, and adapt to
their environment.
The 10 Unifying Themes of Life:
1. Biological Systems – Life functions as organized systems, from cells to
ecosystems.
2. Cellular Basis of Life – All organisms are made of one or more cells.
3. Structure and Function – A body part’s structure is closely related to its
function.
4. Reproduction and Inheritance – Traits are passed from parents to offspring
through DNA.
5. Environmental Interactions – Organisms interact and respond to their
surroundings.
6. Energy and Life – Life processes require energy, usually derived from the sun.
7. Regulation (Homeostasis) – Organisms regulate internal conditions for
stability.
8. Evolution and Diversity – Organisms evolve and adapt, resulting in life’s
diversity.
9. Scientific Inquiry – Biologists explore and explain nature through observation
and experimentation.

  1. Science, Technology, and Society – Biology discoveries impact human life and technology.

Activity 1: “Theme Connection Hunt”

Objective: Identify how each unifying theme manifests in real life. Instructions:

  1. Look around your home or community.
  2. Observe examples that show the unifying themes of life.
  3. Complete the table below. Provide at least 5 examples.
  4. Copy and answer the table on your QUIZ NOTEBOOK. (Note: number 1 is given as an example only) Unifying Theme of Life Real-Life Example Explanation
  5. Structure and Function Bird’s wings Its shape and bone structure allow flight.

Activity 3: Creative Integration – “Life in Order”

Objective: Synthesize learning from both topics using art and creativity. Instructions:

  • On your DRAWING BOOK OR SKETCHPAD, create an illustration or concept map that shows:
    1. The Levels of Biological Organization, and
    2. How the Unifying Themes of Life are expressed in them.
  • Label each level clearly.
  • Include color and creativity — you may draw living examples (e.g., cells, plants, humans, ecosystems).
  • Add a short caption connecting your drawing to one of the unifying themes (e.g., Energy and Life: The sun provides energy that flows through all levels of organization). Rubric for Evaluation (100 points total): Criteria Points Accuracy of concepts 35 Creativity and effort 25 Clarity and labeling 20 Neatness and presentation 20 Questions to Ponder:
  1. Which unifying theme of life do you see most in your daily life?
  2. Which level of biological organization do you find most interesting, and why?
  3. How do both lessons help you appreciate the complexity of living things?
