Genetics: Role of Genes in Inheriting Traits, Including Medical Conditions, Slides of Biology

An overview of genetics, explaining what genes are, the different types of mutations, and how genes influence various behavioral disorders such as schizophrenia, alcoholism, obesity, and depression. It also discusses the role of heredity and environmental factors in these conditions.

GENATICS

GENETICS IS THE BRANCH OF SCIENCE THAT DEALS WITH HOW YOU INHERIT PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIOURAL CHARACTERISTICS INCLUDING MEDICAL CONDITION.

WHAT ARE GENES?

GENES ARE THE SEQUENCES OF DNA

THAT CODED FOR A PROTEIN AND

THUS DETERMINES A TRAIT

RESULT OF MUTATIONS:

  • Many times when a cell undergoes a mutation a cell becomes of less value
  • The cell cannot create a functional protein in a segment of DNA
  • This makes the cell less effective

WHAT ARE SOME BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS THAT GENES INFLUENCE?

  • These are genetic disorder which effect our

behavior

  • Schizophrenia
  • Alcoholism
  • Obesity
  • Depression

ALCOHOLISM

  • Scientist research that people with a family history of alcoholism are more likely to become alcoholic themselves.
  • Using twins and adoption studies researchers found that genes probably plays a part determining how will become an alcoholic.
  • Research are trying to pin point genes related to alcoholism ,but this is difficult since that it may be cause by many different genes.

OBESITY

  • Obesity is a condition of having much more body fat than is a appropriate for a person’s age ,sex and height.
  • The chance of becoming obese link to the person’s genes.
  • Using the method of inheritance studies such as the investigating the pairs of twins researchers have concluded that inherited genes contribute about 40% and environment 60% to weather a person become obese.
