POPULATION GEOGRAPHY

POPULATION GROWTH

  • Birthrate - The number of births per year for every 1, people
  • Death rate - The number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people
  • Natural increase - The growth rate of a population, the difference between an area’s birthrate and its death rate.
  • Migration - The movement of people from place to place.

DEATH RATES

  • Death rates can fall because of more abundant and reliable food supplies.
  • Improved health care
  • Access to medicine and technology.
  • Better living conditions.

ZERO POPULATION GROWTH

  • This is when birthrate and death rate are equal.
  • A country’s population is not growing at ZPG
  • It can still grow as a result of migration.
  • Most developed countries have transitioned into this phase.

CHALLENGES OF GROWTH

  • Increased population growth leads to multiple problems.
  • Producing enough food.
  • Resources are used more quickly.
  • Shortages of water, housing, and clothing occur.
  • Too many young people in a population leads to less people being able to work and more people who

POPULATION PYRAMID

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION

  • Population distribution - The variations in population that occur across a country, a continent, or the world.
  • Population distribution is uneven.
  • Only 30 percent of the Earth’s surface is made of land.
  • About 1/ rd of that is inhabited by humans.
  • People tend to live where soil is fertile, water is available, and the climate is not that harsh.

  • Asia and Europe are the most densely populated continents.

URBANIZATION

  • When large numbers of people move out of rural areas into urban areas.
  • Caused primary by the desire of rural people to find jobs and a better life.
