1. GERUND (V ing) and INFINITIVES (TO+V1)
Look at the list below. In this list you can see the verbs that are used with Gerund, Infinitive
and Both of them!!!
INFINITIVE (TO+V1): afford, agree, appear, arrange, ask, attempt, be pleased, be able,
choose, decide, expect, fail, happen, help, hope, intend, learn, manage, offer, plan, prepare,
pretend, promise, refuse, seem, tend, want, wish, would like.
GERUND (Ving): admit, appreciate, avoid, be capable of, good at, bad at, be interested in,
can’t help, can’t stand, consider, delay, deny, discuss, dislike, enjoy, feel, like, finish, give up,
imagine, involve, look forward, mention, miss, practise, succeed in, suggest, talk about, think
of
BOTH INFINITIVE AND GERUND: begin, continue, hate, be intend, love, prefer, start
!!!BE CAREFUL!!!
THERE ARE SOME VERBS THAT CAN BE USED BOTH WITH GERUND AND
INFINITIVE BUT THEY HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS!!!
1. REMEMBER
a. have a picture in your mind of a past even
I always remember dancing with Brad Pitt. (it is always in my mind)
b. do something you are/were planning to do
Did you remember to lock the door?
2. FORGET
a. to remember a past event (usually I will never forget….)
I never forget dancing with Brad Pitt. (I will always remember it)
b. not remember something you are/were planning to do
Oh, I forgot to lock the door.
3. TRY
a. do something as an experiment to solve a problem
It’s hot! Let’s try opening a window.
b. make an effort to achieve something
I have been trying to open this jar for ten minutes!

  1. Prefer+noun+TO+noun (GENERALLY)** I prefer football to basketball 2. Prefer+Ving+RATHER THAN+Ving/Noun (GENERALLY) I prefer playing football rather than basketball. 3. Prefer+Ving+TO+Ving (GENERALLY) I prefer playing football to playing basketball.
