G.O.A.L.S Essay
I believe Original Inquiry and Service Engagement are most applicable to the goals I have in my
career. My main goals are to get more students interested in the Atmospheric Science and to help
people learn more about the weather so that they know what to do during a particularly
dangerous situation. Both Original Inquiry and Service Engagement have a large effect on these
goals. Before I can start helping people learn about the weather I will need to use Original
Inquiry and do research on how to effectively reach different people who learn differently. I will
have to find creative ways to help some people because not everyone can learn well from a
power point slide or hearing it from a voice on the television. I will also have to research more
into my profession so that I know that I am not giving false information to people that could
endanger their lives. I will also need to use Original Inquiry in order to attract more students of
younger ages into atmospheric science. I will need to create something creative that would teach
children about weather and possibly interest them in a career in it. The research that I do feeds
right into Service Engagement. In order to get more people interested in weather and to help
people learn more about the weather I will have to use my research and do presentations to the
community. Creating events where people can go to learn about the weather will give people
who might learn differently a great opportunity to use their best learning technique to learn about
weather. Community events would also be a great way to present the different fields in
meteorology to students as well. These aspects speak to me because I would like to see even less
deaths from storms and I would like to diversify the meteorology field. Even though storm
deaths in the U.S have gone down, it’s still not zero, there are also other countries that have
massive death tolls due to storms. Also some cities in the U.S that are weather prone are not
prepared for a big storm. If a tornado like the Jarrell, Texas tornado, which had a near 100%
death rate, were to hit a metropolitan area like Dallas-Fort Worth, an area that has very few
basements, the results would be catastrophic. I want to be able to help people make wise
decisions in the least likely but also worst case scenario. I also would like to get more people
interested in meteorology so that there is an increase in ideas that help improve weather
forecasting and predicting. Over the next 4 years I plan on doing more Service Engagement in
the community to prepare myself for future community service. This past year I have been apart
of Scientific Thinkers and STEM Experimental Development where I conduct experiments for
children. This is something I would like to do through college. 10-15 years from now I would
like to start a company that spreads weather awareness and that hosts many community events
with different ways to learn about weather.
