Mysterious Golf Ball Lab
Objective
I am trying to find how the density of a solid changes based upon the liquid in which it is placed.
Introduction
I am using just a normal everyday golf ball that has been used in a golf course and am using a
tomato canning jar for this experiment. The scientific concept that I am trying to examine is how
the golf ball changes within the jar.
Hypothesis
If we leave the golf ball in a closed jar with salt and water, then the golf ball’s density will grow.
Procedure
1. Using a ruler, measure and record on the Report Form the diameter and height of the jar
used. Also include the kind of jar (i.e., canning jar, mayonnaise jar, pickle jar, etc.).
2. Use your beaker to place approximately 3 cm of salt in the quart jar. Keep track of and
record the volume of salt added on the Report Form.
3. Carefully drop the clean golf ball on top of the layer of salt.

4. Again, using your beaker, carefully add water to the quart jar by pouring it down the side

of the jar very slowly so as to minimize stirring up the salt. Add enough of the water to

fill the jar to within 1 cm of the top. Keep track of and record the volume of water added

on the Report Form.

5. Tightly cap the jar with the lid and put it in a place where it can remain undisturbed and

out of direct sunlight for 6 to 8 weeks but also so that you can easily observe it.

6. Record observations at the time you set up the experiment and then once a week from

then on. Observe carefully and clearly describe changes that you see occurring as time

passes. You should make any measurements necessary to fully describe what you are

observing. Also be sure to include the date of your observations in your lab report.

7. Continue the observations for 6 to 8 weeks or until no further significant changes take

place for a week. Create a lab report with all of the required information and then upload

it to the U5A6 assignment dropbox.

8. For the conclusion section of your lab report, study your results and

formulate an explanation for what you observed. Use information from

assignments, labs, and text to help you.

Data

- Dimension of Jar: 8.9 x 8.9 x 17.9 centimeters

- Diameter of Jar: 8 centimeters

- Jar Height: 7.3 centimeters

- Type of Jar: Mason Jar

trying to reach the top of the jar and is now sinking back down. The ball is now back at floating 3 cm above the bottom. The ball is still in the middle and bubbles still are floating around it.

6 10 - 17 - 23^ 4.3 cm^ 2.1 cm^ The golf ball is about 2.

cm above the bottom of the jar and is starting to float towards the left of the jar. There are still bubbles.

7 10 - 24 - 23^ 4.3 cm^ 1.3 cm^ The ball is still floating

and floating about 1.3 cm above the bottom. It has floated to the left of the jar completely.

8 10 - 29 - 23^ 4.3 cm^ 0 cm^ The golf ball is at the left

of the jar. The ball has also completely sunk to the bottom of the jar. There are now very little bubbles and no salt whatsoever. Conclusion In conclusion, my hypothesis was not correct. The density of the ball never changed. However, the height and location of where the ball was in the jar did change. This was a very interesting experiment. I ended up restarting this project because I had a couple of errors. I fell behind but I had kept all the notes on my phone. I started off not really understanding what this project was about. I also did much of my measuring wrong at first. I managed to get the measurements fixed, I feel. I feel like my location of the jar was very good. It was out of sunlight and never was touched. Another error I made was not fixing my hypothesis. Because I was not quite sure what

this lab entailed, I thought my hypothesis was good. I understand now that I should have changed it when I realized about half way through that the density of the ball had not changed.
