This assignment is designed for the development of Graduate Attribute 5: Engineering methods,
skills and tools, including information technology. Upon completion of the assignment, you
should demonstrate competence to use appropriate engineering methods, skills and tools, including
those based on information technology.
Requirements:
1. Develop an Excel spreadsheet to solve the problem set out below. The spreadsheet must
show all calculations and relevant data sourced and given.
2. Provide a brief outline of how the spreadsheet works such that a fellow student can be able
to use it to solve a problem with different pipe sizes, pipe fittings in a separate page including
all the equations used.
Problem statement
A lubricating oil must be delivered through the piping system shown in Fig 1 with a maximum pressure
drop of 60 kPa between points 1 and 2. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.88 and a dynamic viscosity
of 9.5 x 10-3 Pa·s. Determine the maximum allowable volume flow rate of oil.
