Q1) Compulsory
(i) Discuss how values are arrived at for the two constants n and C when used in Taylors tool life equation
(8 marks)
(ii) The following information is known for a lathe machining operation on a particular component: n = 0. C = 150 Tool Change time = 6 min Tool regrind time = 5 min Depreciation of tool per regrind = €0. Machine running cost = €0.025/min
If 200 components are required with a machined length of 400mm at 100mm diameter, the feed rate is 0.25mm/rev.and given that the economic relationships of metal cutting can be represented by the equation below:
Where: J = Total cost per tool change H=Hourly cost of machining
Calculate: The time required to machine the parts (13 marks) The total cost of machining them (12 marks)
(i) The cutting tool for an operation is a combination of geometry and tool material, selected and applied on the basis of a number of different factors. Discuss. (8 marks)
(ii) List the factors which must be considered when designing and constructing a broach for a particular operation. (8 marks)
(iii) Discuss the role played by the work rest and guides in achieving the desired result from a centerless grinding operation. (8 marks)
(iv) List and describe FOUR defects that can be corrected by Honing. Include in your answer reference to surface finishes and tolerances achievable by honing. (8 marks)
