Identified Risks and Hazards
General hazards that may arise when using an electric heating appliance include:
burns from hot metal or components inhalation of noxious fumes overheating can damage work
General hazards that may arise when using a hair dryer in a textiles environment include:
burns from the heated materials or metal component of the dryer inhalation of fumes from hot plastic and paint electrocution – if the electrical cord is damaged surfaces can be damaged due to excess heat from the dryer Top
Pre-operational Safety
Before using the hot glue gun, examine the power cord, extension lead, plugs, sockets and power outlet for damage. Look for:
cracked or damaged casing bare wires or loose connections damage to cord sheathing loose or missing screws
Ensure that there are no flammable gases, liquids or other materials in the work vicinity.
Ensure the hair dryer switch is in the off position when connecting to the mains.
Do not use the hair dryer in confined spaces, or where the ventilation
is considered not to be adequate. Top Operating Safety Precautions
Make sure the dryer has been tested and tagged before you use it. The dryer should not be used near water. Avoid touching metal parts of the dryer as these parts are hot and will cause burns. Never use the dryer near flammable materials or gases. Never leave dryer running unattended. Never lay the dryer down on flammable objects. Do not touch the nozzle while running or shortly after running the dryer. High temperatures may cause damage to most materials. Test before using the dryer on temperature sensitive material. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewelry. Wear non-skid footwear and a protective hair covering to contain long hair. Never carry the dryer by its power cord or pull the cord from an electrical outlet. Disconnect the dryer when not in use.
Avoid unintentional starting. If the dryer stops during operating, disconnect from the power supply and notify your supervisor. When not in use the dryer should be switched off and placed in a safe position.
Do not wind the cord around body of the dryer while it is still hot.
When changing accessories, switch off and allow the accessory and nozzle to cool. Do not restrict any air flow from the nozzle outlet or fan inlet louvres.
Top Daily Maintenance
On completion of the heating procedure, make sure the dryer has cooled down before returning it to its storage position.
The dryer should be cleaned before being stored away by wiping over with a clean damp cloth; do not use any chemicals.
Ensure that the ventilation slots are not blocked.
