Most of the plot is easy to follow, but some of the politics can get confusing if you don't already know American history and how things are run. Some political practices, such as cabinet debates, move quickly, and there's a lot of information at once. Luckily, the music and Burr's narration make it easier to keep the big picture in mind. iii. The story mostly goes in order, from Hamilton's arrival in America to his death. There's one big rewind during "Satisfied" where Angelica goes back in time to recall the moment she met Hamilton and the events that followed. iv. The main conflicts are Hamilton vs. Burr, Hamilton vs. Jefferson, and Hamilton vs. himself. Burr kills him, Jefferson wins politically, and his legacy stays messy. These conflicts give the story its drama and intensity. b. Character i. Each character has clear goals: Hamilton wants to rise above his past and leave a legacy of success, while Burr seeks respect by waiting for the right moment. Eliza wants a loving family, and Angelica tries to protect her sister while managing her own feelings. These objectives create the conflicts and choices that move the plot forward. ii. Hamilton's nonstop ambition pushes the story forward. His actions, like writing the Federalist Papers, getting into fights with Jefferson, and exposing his affair, shape the entire plot. His drive also connects to the bigger theme of legacy and how far someone will go to make their mark on the world. Without him pushing so hard, a lot of the drama wouldn't have happened. iii. Alexander Hamilton's psychological makeup is defined by ambition, intelligence, and a fear of being forgotten, like he was as a child. He is restless and obsessed with leaving a legacy, which makes him work constantly and take risks. He struggles with impulsiveness and pride, often putting his goals above personal relationships. At the same time, he is

iv. Thomas Kail brings everything together with fast-paced, sharp choreography and focused storytelling. The lighting, staging, and movement match Hamilton’s nonstop energy, while still slowing down in key emotional moments. The direction makes the theme of legacy clear by keeping the story personal but also larger than life, helping the audience connect with the message. d. Diction i. The characters’ language reflects their intelligence, class and ambition. Hamilton speaks fast with clever wordplay, showing his sharp mind and hunger to prove himself. Jefferson and Burr use more polished language, showing their political status. Eliza talks slowly and with a purpose, articulating her words in a mature and feminine way. The mix of formal speech and rap makes their personalities clear. ii. Symbolism through repeated lines and imagery adds power to the dialogue and layers of meaning and emotion. Lines like “I am not throwing away my shot” become symbols of ambition. Storms, war and writing show what’s happening inside the characters as much as outside. iii. The actors handled the language skillfully, making the fast-paced, complex dialogue clear and engaging. They projected their voices strongly so that even rapping or long monologues could be heard across the theater. Articulation was precise, which helped the audience follow tricky rhymes, historical references, and dense political language. The actors also changed their pace to match the emotions of the scene, while maintaining consistent dialects when needed. This made the characters distinct and believable. Overall, their control of language made the story easy to follow and emotionally impactful. iv. “Who lives, who dies, who tells your story” is one of the most powerful lines. It sums up the message about legacy and memory. Another is by Eliza when she says, “You and your words flooded my senses, your sentences left me defenseless, you built me palaces out of paragraphs, you built cathedrals.” This is after Alexander has an affair and she is mourning

the loss of her husband and every loving word he has ever articulated to her. e. Spectacle i. The set is simple yet powerful. The wooden scaffolding, ropes, and brick walls make the stage feel like a part of the story. The lighting changes constantly to match the mood, bright during big political scenes and dim with spotlights during emotional moments like “Burn” or the duel. Costumes are colonial but clean and modernized, which keeps the historical setting clear without feeling old-fashioned. These elements make the show feel alive and help shift between war rooms, parties, and battlefields without changing the set too much. ii. The setting shows that the characters are building something new. The unfinished wood and scaffolding mirror how the country is still being built. It fits Hamilton’s story because he’s trying to build his own legacy in a world that’s still being shaped. iii. The design style is suggested realism. The set isn’t overly detailed, but it gives the audience just enough to imagine different places. Lighting and movement help create the rest. For example, spinning the turntable during “Yorktown” and the duel scenes gives a sense of action without needing big props. iv. Thomas Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler use staging and choreography to make strong stage pictures. When Hamilton steps forward to deliver important lines, the ensemble freezes behind him, pulling focus. The duels are choreographed like slow-motion scenes, letting the emotion land. The ensemble’s movement fills empty space and makes transitions smooth, pushing the story forward even when the set doesn’t change. f. Sound i. Sound helped tell the story and show the characters. The fast music in songs like “My Shot” and “Non-Stop” shows Hamilton’s energy and drive. Rap battles like “Cabinet Battle #1” let characters argue and show their personalities. Sound effects, like gunshots during duels or loud

himself. They want the audience to see that history is made by real people, not just

names in a book. More than anything, they want to inspire viewers to think about

their own story and how it fits into something bigger. It’s meant to be both exciting

and thought-provoking.

3. Impact/Value

This production has a lot of value because it makes history feel real and personal. It shows that the people who shaped the country weren’t perfect heroes but complex individuals with flaws and emotions. That kind of storytelling can help audiences connect to history in a way that textbooks don’t. It also shows how powerful theatre can be when different artistic elements work together. The music and acting make the story memorable. For some people, it might inspire them to learn more about the past or think about their own legacy. For others, it might just give them a new way to experience a part of history they thought they already knew. Even if someone doesn’t love musicals, there’s value in how the show blends old and new to tell an important story in a way that feels fresh and meaningful.
