The researchers gathered different related literatures and studies about the topic that will be helpful to have a better understanding about the topic.

Causes of Having a Relationship while studying

Developing a romantic relationship is considered as an elating experience by many youth. Through the course of adolescence and young adults, pre marital romantic relationship develops and can characterized with passion and commitment were consistent with adult’s view of love(Connolly, Craig, Goldberg & Pepler, 1999).

During teenage years there was a significant increase in behaviours related to romantic interests and analyzing from a lifespan perspective, romantic experiences could represent a singular phase of meaningful development spanning across periods (Collins, Hennighawen, Schrnit & Sroufe, 1997).

Several young women settle for proposal for dates simply to be with somebody because of concern of being alone and left. According to a research of Alfonso Osario (2009) relationships, love and sexuality: what the Filipino teens think and feel, an exploration was conducted in Manila. Tytana faculties and participants were asked however usually they returned got info

relating to love and sex from completely different sources. The supply most frequently marked as "always" or "almost always" by males and females, was, by far, friends (69.6% for the males and fifty seven. 5% for the females), followed, within the case of males, by the web and youth magazines (27.1%); and, within the case of females, by folks (30.7%). one in every of the key biological process tasks of adolescence is forming a way of identity whereby children realize their inspiration through their peers, within the method of processing their personal values and deciding their goals in providing values onto themselves

On the other hand, according to Arnet (as cited in Fincham & Cui,

  1. "late adolescents" is the stage where teenagers experienced how to be totally and socially independent. This is the time for curiosity & explorations in selecting and having a partner, exploring this curiosity somehow leads to romantic relationship However, this sort of relationship might not cause a pleasing and intense relationship. This is just a result of their inquisitive mind and a sort of finding on how to fit into the world. What is life all about? Questions such as these assume special significance during teenage years as adolescents seek to find their place in broader and social world. This quest takes adolescents on many routes.

Effects of Having a Relationship while studying

Romantic relationship has a great role in academic performance of adolescent as theorists’ stated. Vgotsky’s theory states that social interaction plays a very important role in the cognitive development of a person and could

personality. She also additionally stated that it is a way of knowing one’s unique qualities of opposite sex and at the same time choosing the right life partner.

There are instances in which romantic relationship may hurt adolescents and because of this they need adults who will guide them in developing healthy relationships (Luqman, 2009). Within the same vein, Connolly & Johnson (cited in Weichold & Barber, 2008) said that even though romantic relationship plays an important role in the development of an adolescent, most romantic relationship within the adolescence stage last for less than six months to one year. This situation implies frequent break-ups which cause anxiety among adolescents from Monroe ET. Al (as cited in Furman, 2002) affirmed that breakups are mostly the cause of depression among adolescents. Furman (2002) also states that adolescents are mostly prone to problems in adjustment when they got involved in romantic relationships at an early stage of their adolescent life. According to Erikson (as cited in Feldman, 2009) people proceed through eight stages of psycho-social development across their lives. He suggested that each stage requires the resolution of a crises or conflict and may produce both positive and negative outcomes.

Teens nowadays consider romantic relationship as the number one source of stress (Manning et al., 2009). It results from the break-ups or conflicts with partner. Even those who give more importance on academics, spending time with one’s partner may also serve as a distraction. Myers

(2010) also said that: For university students, relationships consume much of life. How much of your waking life is spent talking with people? One sampling of 10,000 tape recordings of half-minute slices of students’ waking hours (using belt-worn recorders) found them talking to someone 28% of the time and that doesn’t count the time they spent to someone (Mehl & Pennebaker, 2003). In 2008, the average American 13-17 year-old sent or received 1742 text messages per month (pp. 393-394).

Stress is a continuous feeling of worry about work or personal life that prevents someone from relaxing. Campbell, as cited by Crissey (2006), pointed out that stress is a condition or effect that is bad and can cause some problems. For example, students who are having any romantic affair will have a higher percentage of stress than those who don’t have because instead of focusing to their academic work and academic stresses, they also commit their time to their relationship.

Morris & Maisto (1995) added that anxiety which can be taken from “internal and external forces” brings about stress. They also described how someone or something frustrates individuals when it stands between them and their goals. This would cause a dilemma on “irreconcilable demands, opportunity, needs or goals”. They added that delays, lack of resources, losses, failure and discrimination” are the primary cause of aggravation.

On the other hand based on the study of University of the Philippines Cebu those who are in romantic relationship while studying have decreased their general average from the first semester to the second semester of the

Research Design

This study uses phenomenology as a research method chosen by the researchers.

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, phenomenology is a philosophical movement that describes the formal structure of the objects of awareness and of awareness itself in abstraction from any claims concerning existence.

On the other hand, qualitative research involves the meanings, concepts, definitions, characteristics, symbols and descriptions of things. it requires non-numerical data which means they use of words rather than numbers to express the results, the inquiry of investigations about peoples’ thought, beliefs, feelings, views and lifestyle regarding the object of the study.

The researchers study conducted a qualitative research using phenomenology as their method. The study can be defined as qualitative research because it aims to define and describe the experiences of human life. And it is phenomenology because it attempts to understand the insights of the participants according to their experience and views to the given topic.

Research Locale

This research was conducted inside the area of Rodriguez province or

Rizal.

Montalban is originally a name of a town in Toledo, Spain established in the 1490’s. It is said to be a Spanish contraction of the words, “Monte Alba” or “white mountain”. The name also alludes to Alban Hills (Monte Albano) in Lazio, Italy where popes and Roman nobles built historic castles. “Montalban, Rizal” was established in 1871 during the Spanish rule by Padre Eustaquio, a native of Pasig. Montalban was carved out of the town of San Mateo to combine four barrios, namely: Balite, Burgos, Maran, and Calapihan. Balite served as first town center. It was called so after the “balete” or strangler fig trees that grew abundantly on the banks of Montalban River. Later, a chapel or “Pasong Vista” was erected on the present location where the Catholic Church and cemetery stand.

Participant 1 : Lovely Rose Ancheta pangalan ko, 20 nako nung nagka boyfriend ako nung 18 years old nako college nako nun pero di ako nakapagtapos ng pag-aaral kasi maaga akong lumandi. (My name is Lovely Ancheta, 20 years old I got a boyfriend when I was 18 years old college student but I did not finish school because I flirt early).

(My name is Loreta M. Nivera, I’m 42 years old now hmmm my boyfriend and I we’re in a relationship in college when I was 18 but he is not my boyfriend because he is already my husband .During our relationship my grades are getting higher and he helped me in whatever we do).

Participant 3 : Jinelle M. Baluyot. 18 years old. Grade 12 ako ngayon at may boyfriend ako ngayon. Feeling ko pag naiisip ko sya ginagnahan ako mag- aral tapos lagi akong sabik pumasok kasi makikita ko sya. (I’m Jinelle M. Baluyot, 18 years old and I’m in grade 12 and I have a boyfriend. I think of that feeling when I think about him I getting exploited in my studies

and then I’m always anxious to go everyday to school because I can see him).

Participant 4 : Evelyn Deuda Oquendo 53 years old. yung una kong syota nung 3rd year ako. (I’m Evelyn Deuda Oquendo, 53 years old. My first sweetheart is when I’m in 3rd year. In the first I’m on the Top students but then when I fell in love I lost my top and I also lost my interest in my studies).

Participant 5 : Rowena Rose Mendoza 51 years old. (I’m Rowena Rose Mendoza 51 years old. Hmmm It does not have any effect on me on having a relationship before when I was studying he is so understanding and then my mother says that if my grades are get off cause he is my boyfriend we are getting separated).

Participant 6 : Edelita Deuda 54 years old. (Edelita Deuda, 54 years old. When I have a boyfriend before it’s okay, we’re so happy then we breakup there I don’t know what to do. I can’t study well then, I lost my appetite in my studies so I can’t be able to graduate).

Analysis : It can be seen that most of our participants are having their relationship while studying in High school. It can also be seen that most of them answered that being in a relationship affects their academic performance negatively.

Interpretation : It can be concluded that being in a relationship affects their grades and leads to mishandled and some of them are being in a good status as of the moment with their high school relationship. As stated by Crissey (2006) in her study about impact of romantic relationship on high school girls, there is really a challenge in "balancing romantic relationship and academic performance" in a teenager's life. It gives pressure on how to maintain the romantic side and the academic works as well.

Case Number 2: Causes of having an early Relationship While Studying

Participant 1 : Nagka boyfriend ako nun kasi ano hmm ayun! kasi dati sabik ako magka syota kaya nung may nagkagusto sakin ayun pinatulan kona. ( I have a boyfriend cause what hmm there! Cause before I was anxious of having a relationship so there when someone adore’s me I judged him already).

(Before, I was tempted to that and teasing me? then there until I liked him there’s no courtinghappened we’re in a relationship immediately).

Participant 3 : Ayun siguro yung nagtulak sakin na magka boyfriend ako is yung environment na ginagalawan ko kasi diba sa gantong age parang normal nalang magka jowa? tas ayun ee gusto korin naman talaga sya kaya after nya manligaw sinagot kona sya hihi. (Maybe the one who pushed me to have a boyfriend is the environment where I’m in cause in my age it’s normal to have a boyfriend? Then there ee I want it already and when he courted me I immediately responded).

(Maybe in the first it was just joke ii that’s why we were together until but we also broke up).

(I don’t know? Cause I love him ii when he courted me ii then he shows to me that he is sincere).

Participant 6 : Pinakilala lang kasi siya sakin ng kaibigan ko nun tas ano hmm ano bay un parang ayun nagkakilala kami ayun nagustuhan naming ung isa’t- isa. (My friends introduced him on me then what hmm what is it maybe there we met there we liked each other).
