Academic Advising Notes for Health Sciences

  • Chemistry is required as part of the Health Sciences core. Depending on the student’s goals, either CHM 101

or CHM 111-112 may be chosen. If CHM 101 is taken, an additional 4 credits of approved electives should

take the place of CHM 112.

  • For students who intend to pursue a post-graduate education in a professional health field, JMU offers

advising for the following minors: Pre-dentistry, Pre-medicine, Pre-occupational Therapy, Pre-optometry,

Pre-pharmacy, Pre-physical Therapy, Pre-physician Assistant and Pre-veterinary Medicine. More

information can be found on the Pre-Professional Health Advising web site. See below for social

science/humanities electives based on pre-professional health program.

  • Students interested in a pre-professional health program may need additional math; consult with the JMU

transfer advisor.

  • Some pre-professional health programs recommend specific social science courses; consult with the JMU

transfer advisor.

  • BIO 141 and 142 must be taken at the same college in order to guarantee credit for BIO 270 (Human

Physiology) and BIO 290 (Human Anatomy) at JMU.

  • For those interested in JMU's Occupational Therapy program, please note : students who complete

anatomy & physiology I and II at the community college will receive credit for BIO 270 (Human Physiology)

and 290 (Human Anatomy), however it is highly recommended that human anatomy be completed at

JMU. BIO 414 and 514, Functional Anatomy for OTs, are required in the first year of the MOT program, and

require a solid background in human anatomy. Students who have completed a separate human anatomy

course (as opposed to a combination of anatomy and physiology) tend to be more successful in the

graduate level anatomy courses, therefore students who transfer these courses in may be advised to retake

BIO 290 at JMU.

  • In order to earn credit for HTH 210, JMU’s medical terminology course, both HLT 143 and 144 must be

taken. Students will earn credit for HTH 210 and an additional 3 credits of HTH elective.

  • HLT 230 counts as an elective in the major, but is not required. Students may choose to take a difference

elective.
