Assessment Code: JOT2 Task 1 high School Shop Class and Measurement Instructional Setting and Content Area The Instructional Setting will be in a High School Wood-Shop. The content that will be focused on is the re-acquaintance with measurement, fractions and simple mathematic concepts like calculating area. Instructional Problem The instructional problem is the retention of basic mathematic concepts like calculating area, fractions (measurement uses fractions to a 1/16th^ of an inch in the instructional setting), and using a measuring tape. Beyond the retention of these concepts there is also a lack of confidence in using all the concepts that are needed in an everyday wood-shop classroom setting. Instructional Goal Statement The Instructional goal for these High School aged Wood-Shop students is for students to be able to read a measuring tape and use fractions, and perform basic mathematical skills proficiently. Measuring tapes will be provided, lessons presented by the instructor and exercises in these concepts will used to reach this instructional goal. {JNT2 needs assessment assignment} Requisite Entry-Level Knowledge and Skills The requisite skills that learners already should know prior to the implementation of this instructional unit are:

 A fifth grade knowledge of fractions that should be reinforced prior to High School  A working understanding of how to find the surface area of an object.  A working knowledge of how to measure an object using a measuring tape to find the length, height and width of an object. Prior Knowledge and Skills The students in this exercise have varying level of prior knowledge and skills in this instructional setting. This is due to the fact that there is a wide age range of the students (Freshman to Senior year in High School) as well as years of experience in the Shop classroom setting. As discovered in the data gathering for the problem statement, every student has taken some introductory class in basic mathematics and measurement in an Elementary School setting. Students were taught units of measurement in fractions of an inch, inches, and feet in elementary school but haven't used them in a practical application in a classroom using a ruler/measuring tape since that time. Students were also taught to find the surface area of an object in Elementary School but have difficulty in finding surface area when asked to find the area of a table top when given the length and width dimensions in inches. {based off the JNT2 project's findings} Since entry-level students haven't used those concepts in quite some time and their retention has suffered as a result, these students would need remediation. The second year students and beyond exercise greater proficiency because they have used the concepts and are second, third and fourth year students in this elective class and use a measuring tape with more frequency. {based off the JNT2 project's findings} Learner Group Unique Characteristics There are many unique characteristics to take into consideration. Because this elective class is one that practices Inclusion, there are a vast amount of abilities represented in the High

traditional classroom settings, the individual attention paid to each student may vary as the classroom size does which is why partnering will aid in instruction. Performance Context The students will be using the concepts taught and will be evident in the wood-shop setting on a daily basis as they are requisite skills to make their projects. They will have to measure in order to cut boards to their desired lengths and widths. They will have to use fractions in order to figure out their desired measurements. The learners with have to be able to using fractions when doing drawings to scale as well as use multiplication when figuring out surface areas for the tables and chairs they are making to ensure that they have enough product to build their projects as well as paint/stain their projects. Throughout all phases there will be continual reinforcement of these skills as they are used on a daily basis in a Wood-Shop setting. References McGrath, J, J. (2019).
