EECS 210 Homework 1 Due: 1/29/09 Name _________________________
Turn in complete solutions to all of the following problems. Write on only one side of the paper
and do the problems in order. The answers to all short answer questions must be justified.
Staple the pages in the upper left corner with this page on top.
If you need additional help on this material, do the problems for which the answers are given,
use the software on the web to practice concepts, and/or see Meeyoung or me for additional
help.
1 Do the following problems from the text:
Section 1.2 # 2 b, 7 d, f, 12, 18, 26 a, d
Section 1.3 # 5 b, d, 6 b, 9 c, 12 b, 13 b, 21 e
2. State the inverse, converse and contrapositive of the following statement:
If x+y is odd, then either x is odd and y is even or x is even and y is odd.
3. Write the following, in good English, in "if ... then ..." form:
In order to get to the meeting, it is necessary to leave campus by 5:00.
4. Use a truth table to prove or disprove that the following statements are equivalent:
p (q q r) and (q p q) (q p r)
12 20
5. Evaluate the following summation: (q j)
i=3 j=10
Bonus: Find a closed form expression for the following: an = 2 an-1 + 3 an-2 a0 = 3 a1 = 1. All
work must be shown to receive credit. If you “guessed” the answer, carefully explain how you
arrived at your answer.
