ECE 340 - Electronics I: Lab Assignment 4, Assignments of Basic Electronics

A lab assignment for the electronics i course (ece 340) at the university of illinois at chicago. It includes instructions for designing circuits to produce a dc output from an ac input, calculating diode currents, and designing a dc power supply. Students are expected to draw circuits and provide calculations.

Homework #4: due 2/18/04. (Draw your circuits or write answers in the space provided below.)

  1. Design a circuit that produces +10 volts d.c. output when its input is from an ideal a.c. source with value v (^) I ( t )= 5 cos( ω t ) volts:

(assume ideal diodes, infinite load resistance; do not use a transformer)

  1. Design a d.c. power supply composed of a transformer, diode bridge rectifier, filter capacitor and load resistance having the following specifications:
    • Ideal transformer, ideal diodes are used
    • Input a.c. source = 60 Hz sinusoid at 115 volts r.m.s.
    • Output voltage is 5.0 ± 1% volts
    • Load resistance value = 100 Ohms

Draw the circuit below, specifying transformer primary and secondary r.m.s. voltages and capacitor/resistor values:

(Show all work)

  1. In the circuit shown as Fig. 3.41(a) at the top of p. 187, we are told that v (^) I ( t )= 10 sin( 2 π ⋅ 60 Hzt )volts, and R = 1. 0 KOhms. The peak current for diode D may not exceed 100 mA, or else the diode may overheat and fail.

a) Given the specifications above, what is the smallest output voltage ripple amplitude V (^) p that may be achieved?

b) What, therefore, should be the value of filter capacitor C in order to have the least amount of output ripple voltage while not overheating the diode?
