How to Be A Good Friend
(1)To be a good friend, an individual has to spend time working on her friendships, or
they will eventually fade. (2)When two people first meet, they both need to be sure they are
acting in good manor, and they don’t scare the other away. (3) The moment they meet and start
talking a few times, they will start getting to know each other, calling each other, and spending
more time with each other. (4)That is how a friendship begins. (5) When they call each other
friends, the friendship has to be made through the effort of more than just one person, but each
has to do her own part. (6)Friendships shouldn’t take a lot of money instead they do take a lot of
time and care. (7)Friends should always listen to what the other has to say, you should give
advice only when asked for it. (8)No matter how much friends are alike, everyone has
differences, because a friend should be able to accept their differences. (9) As being a friend to a
person for a long period of time, one might get tired of hearing repeated problems everyday,
however a good friend will always be there for her friend no matter what. --Denise Rafferty

Directions: Read and examine an excerpt of a book review written by a Grade 11 student for her Reading and Writing class ...I don’t think that the author of the book gave justice to the characters. I was appalled with the idea that Sienna died at the end. It was heart-breaking. I cried my heart out as I finished reading the book. The book became my new favorite and I don’t think I will be able to love another book as much as I love this one... Questions:

  1. Is her choice of words appropriate for a book review? Why or why not?
    • No because she spoils the ending of the story and readers who did not yet read the book might not enjoy the plot of the story as much as she did.
  2. Point out 3 words that are inappropriate. Suggest a more appropriate alternative for each word.  I don’t think that the author – the plot of the story was unexpected  Appalled – Frightened  Sienna died at the end – something horrible happened to Sienna
  3. What do you think should she do to improve her writing task?
    • She should not express her feelings too strongly in order to avoid spoiling the plot and detracting from the excitement.
