ARGUMENTATIVE / DISCURSIVE ESSAY
An argumentative essay presents a forceful set of reasons for adopting one point
of view; a persuasive stance is taken from the outset.
In this type of essay, you are expected to state and justify your opinions on a given
topic.
You need to attempt to prove your point or at least give reasons in support of what
you think.
You need to have formulated a mature opinion about your topic.
Plan a well-developed and logical argument: each stage must be linked to the
preceding point.
A clear, defined, cohesive and developed argument must unfold.
You must focus on your argument, but you must have a counter-argument.

ARGUMENTATIVE / DISCURSIVE ESSAY

  • An argumentative essay presents a forceful set of reasons for adopting one point

The Discursive Essay

●A discursive essay presents a balanced view which examines both sides of

an issue. The topic is discussed in a logical, impartial manner.

●In this type of essay your task is to remain impartial and acknowledge

various viewpoints.

●Plan your essay carefully so that you do not appear to be contradicting

yourself.

●A well-balanced discussion must unfold.

Brainstorming and logically planning an argumentative/discursive essay :

  • Plan these key points in a logical, structured way; each paragraph should contain a single ,
  • specific topic (one topic sentence) and the rest should be supporting material / examples
  • / statistics.
  • Consider ways you can substantiate your points: use facts, statistics, quotes from famous
  • people, historical facts, examples that provide backing evidence.
  • Think of ways you can second guess points from the opposing argument; to second
  • guess means to anticipate the opposition you are going to receive and to flatten that argument
  • even before it is raised.
  • If you use this technique, you show that you are thoughtful and that you do
  • not simply entertain a bigoted one-sided view of the argument.
  • Signposting is essential; this means you need to help the reader follow the logic of your argument.
  • Signposts are usually found at the beginning of a paragraph and may be single words like however , ’
