Measuring Recognition Memory: Analyzing Ability to Identify Past Information, Exams of Psychology

An overview of recognition memory, a type of memory where the ability to distinguish old from new stimuli is assessed. Various recognition tests, including two-alternative forced choice (2-afc) and yes/no recognition, and discusses the importance of confidence levels and signal detection theory in evaluating recognition performance. The document also introduces the concept of receiver operating characteristic (roc) curves and z-roc curves for assessing memory at different criteria.

Recognition memory

PSY 373, Human Memory

Housekeeping

  • Should have handed in Sternberg Search experiment report on Monday.
  • Next experiment report is Implicit Learning, complete by October 25, due on Oct 30.
  • Oct 30 also exam review. Exam 2 on Nov 1.

Reading on recognition

  • Chapter 9, Neath & Suprenant
  • Chapter 2, Kahana, Foundations of Human Memory, Supplemental reading on-line.
  • Spiffy signal-detection tutorial.

Important stuff from last time

  • Hmmm...i wasn’t here, was i?

Overview of Today’s Material

  • Measuring recognition memory
    1. Types of recognition test.
    2. Hit rate, false alarm rate
    3. Signal detection theory
    4. ROC curves and zROC curves.

What is recognition memory?

  • In recall tasks, you have to generate the stimulus
  • In recognition, you are given the stimulus and have to assess your memory for it.
  • As a control, you’re asked for your memory for lures, items that were not presented.
  • Memory is assessed by the ability to distinguish old from new.

Types of recognition tests

  • Two alternative forced choice (2-AFC) vs yes/no recognition.
  • Confidence levels in yes/no recognition.
  • Item recognition vs associative recognition.
