What is Critical Reading?

Critical reading is a more ACTIVE

way of reading. It is a deeper and

more complex engagement with a

text. Critical reading is a process of

analyzing, interpreting and,

sometimes, evaluating.

When we read critically , we

use our critical thinking skills

to QUESTION both the text

and our own reading of it.

What is Critical Reading?

Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

a. define explicit and implicit

b. identify claims explicitly stated in the

text versus what is implicitly stated in

the text.

c. Construct meaningful

inferences/conclusion from a text

Do-Now

Observe 1 thing about

each photo, record your

observations.

Explicit information is any

idea that is stated.

With explicit information,

you see the text explained!

Since you are looking for explicit

information in what is read, the

explicit information will be written

in the text. There is no need to

look for clues. Just read. If the

information is written it is explicit

What is implicit in a text?

Implicit information is understood

but it is not stated. To find implicit

information in what is read, you will

have to think about what you read.

Look for clues as you read.

Inferring & Predicting

What isn’t stated that I have figured out?

What do I predict will happen?

Why do I think so?

tip on an iceberg

explicit

implicit

beneath the surface

Explicit:

  • (^) is literal
  • (^) Is very clear and complete
  • (^) leaves no doubt the meaning

Explicit:

  • (^) is inferred
  • (^) Is understood even if it is

not stated

Explicit Implicit

Compare and Contrast

  • (^) Implied
  • (^) Indirect
  • (^) Inferred
  • (^) Reading between the

lines

  • (^) Literal
  • (^) Direct
  • (^) Surface level reading

Example

I looked at the speedometer…Jose

was driving even faster. "Please slow

down," I said. "We're coming to a

really bad curve in the road!" But he

didn't slow down and the snow was

drifting higher and higher. I could

hardly see the road!

What can we infer?

What can we infer?

Cause, honey, your soul could

never grow old, it's evergreen

Implicit

Evergreen = a plant

that never loses its

leaves

He implies that she will

always be young and

beautiful to him.

Cause, honey, your soul could

never grow old, it's evergreen
