Sunflower Growth Experiment: Investigating the Effects of Different Fertilizers, Assignments of Biology

Fertilizer SciencePlant NutritionExperimental Design

An experimental design project focused on testing the impact of various fertilizers on sunflower growth. The student, nathan spencer, formulates research questions regarding the most reactive fertilizers for sunflowers and their potential effects on plant development. The project includes designing an experiment with independent and dependent variables, controlled conditions, and data presentation plans.

What you will learn

  • Which fertilizers are most reactive with the growth of a sunflower?
  • Could some fertilizers be universal in growth without altering the final product produced?
  • How will fertilizers not meant for the flower benefit or stunt the growth of the plant?

Write a hypothesis for the problem/observa0on/natural phenomenon you will be examining. OR Write research/study ques0ons if your project is more discovery based/descrip0ve rather than hypothesis-driven. Which fer6lizers are most reac6ve with the growth of a sunflower? How will fer6lizers not meant for the flower benefit/stunt the growth of the plant? Could some fer6lizers be universal in growth without altering the final product produced? 3. Design an experiment to test your hypothesis OR answer your research/study ques0ons. You will need to review your experiment with your laboratory instructor before you begin your actual experiment. Be sure to consider and iden0fy the following in the experiment you design: • based on the experiment you will be using to test your hypothesis, what are 1 or 2 plausible predic6on(s)?– The nitrogen based fer6lizers will benefit the sunflower most. • independent variable(s)– the type of fer6lizer used on the sunflower • dependent variable(s) and how you’ll measure it/them– flower growth • controlled variables– type of flower, type of fer6lizer, sunlight, water, soil, 6me allowed for growth • control group (if applicable)– sunflower with no fer6lizer used for growth • experimental group (if applicable)– sunflowers with fer6lized with different fer6lizers • whether the data are qualita0ve or quan0ta0ve– quan6ta6ve, measured growth based on measuring how tall the plant is and budding. • how you might present this data– I will present this data through a graph that demonstrates the growth of the sunflowers with different fer6lizers • replica0on and/or sample size– I will have 5 sunflowers, using 1 as my control and the other 4 as my experimental groups. 4. Briefly describe how you plan to conduct your experiment/study: I will buy 5 sunflowers and calculate how different fer6lizers affect growth. Also buying different fer6lizers which include: miracle-gro bloom booster, grass fer6lizer, miracle-gro organics (meant for potatoes), round-up, and Jobe’s all purpose fer6lizer. I will measure out each fer6lizer to its recommended “serving size” and distribute it evenly on it’s designated flower. Providing the flowers with equal sunlight, water, and 6me to react with the fer6lizers I will then measure growth of the flower. Doing this over 6me throughout the designated experiment pyramid I will then be able to determine which fer6lizers are most and least reac6ve with the sunflower. No6ng all of the data collected throughout the tes6ng period I will be able to draw the connec6ons between fer6lizers and sunflower growth.
