Installing Power Outlets

Description:

This learning element deals with the different kinds

of wall plugs and socket outlets and procedures in installing

them.

Identifying socket outlets configurations

1. A power socket (electrical socket,

power point, mains socket, plug-in, outlet, receptacle, or female power connector) is a connection point that delivers main electricity when a plug is inserted into it. It is the opposite of a plug, and usually has only female features.

2. Polarized outlets are different in

that the slot for the neutral wire is wider than the slot for the hot wire. This makes it difficult to insert the electrical plug the wrong way.

  1. Non-Polarized outlets have two vertical slots side by side that are the same size.

Information Sheet 01

Identifying socket outlets configurations

IDENTIFICATION:

Direction: Describe the following socket outlet configurations

  1. three-pin convenience outlet, grounded 2. t-shaped slot outlet
  2. weather proof convenience outlet, duplex, 3-pin 4. twist lock outlet
  3. non-polarized outlet, grounded 6. polarized outlet, duplex, ungrounded

PROCEDURES

  1. Secure Working Drawing 1. (You have used it when you perform rough-in activities using rigid nonmetallic conduit.)
  2. You will be installing the 3-pin Special Purpose Outlet (SPO).
  3. Wiring Diagram:

4. Prepare the materials and tools

needed.

5. Be sure that the main switch is OFF

to avoid accidents.

6. Strip off the wires approximately

equal to the measurement required by the manufacturer of the wiring device (strip gauge).

7. The left and right side holes are

intended for hot lines. Since our AC supply system is line to line, these two lines are interchangeable. The holes on the bottom are intended for earth as indicated by the symbol therein.

8. Insert the white wire fully into the

hole marked W.

9. Then insert the black wire to the

other side.

10. Then insert the green wire (ground

wire) to the bottom hole.

utility box.

12. Tighten the screws

13. Mount the plate cover.

14. Perform housekeeping and ask your

instructor to check your work
