Introduction: The definition of an Actuator and what is the crucial function of it An actuator is a device that moves / controls some mechanism. An actuator โ s job Is to turn a control signal into mechanical action such as an electric motor. Actuators may be based on hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, thermal or mechanical means, but are increasingly being driven by software. An actuator ties a control system to its environment. Summary about the history of actuators on Mercedes Benz CLS ( - ): One of the most common failures on the Mercedes CLS models ranging from 2004 โ 2010 is the Electronic Turbo Actuator. The electronic turbo actuator also known as the (waste gate) is controlled by the engine ECU and has a rod connecting to the turbo vanes which is designed to regulate the flow of boost pressure from the turbocharger. Signs that there is a burn out Electronic Turbo Actuator: When the electronic turbo actuator becomes faulty, the driver may experience loss of power, warning lights appearing on the dash, juddering on acceleration
or a combination of faults depending on how the actuator has failed and whether the turbo vanes were open or closed when the actuator failed. Some of the most common symptoms weโve seen from a failed turbo actuator on the Mercedes CLS include: โ Loss of power under acceleration โ Intermittent loss of power under acceleration โ Smoking on acceleration โ Fault codes pointing to turbo actuator โ Fault Code: 2510 โ Boost Pressure Control โ Actuator arm not moving โ Engine light on โ Limp mode
In a mechanical device, an actuator is a component that turns the control signal into movement. Examples of actuators include: โ Electric motors โ Solenoids โ Hard drive stepper motors โ Comb drives Actuators is either powered by electric current, hydraulic fluid or pneumatic pressure. In embedded systems, the control signal comes from a microcontroller programmed by software. Device drivers send input to a peripheral device, such as a printer. Therefore, actuators typically provide circular motion, they can convert circular motion into linear motion via screws and wheel-and-axle devices. An example of the latter is a rack and pinion system.
What are is Relation between Sensors & Actuators: Sensors and actuators are integrated with automotive control computers that help optimize vehicle performance while improving reliability and durability.
Examples of solenoid actuator are the ones used in Fuel injector. Time taken by an injector to open and close is critical in fuel injection. The induction of the coil plays an important role in the reaction time for the solenoid. (Higher inductance - > longer reaction time, ballast resistors). Another application of solenoid actuator is for door locks door locks. 2 ) Solenoid Actuator
Piezo Actuators: A piezo actuator enables response times of just a few Tenth of a millisecond. It consists of many crystal layers that expand by a few hundredths of millimetres when voltage is a few hundredths of millimetres when voltage is applied. One of the automotive applications of the Piezo actuators is in Diesel Unit Injection systems. 3 ) Piezo Actuators
