What is an interrogative pronoun?

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. They can be the subject or the object in the question. The main interrogative pronouns are: who, whom, whose, what, which. Examples:

Who works in the lab? (subject)

Whom did you speak to? (object)

Whose is this shirt? (object)

What are these liquids? (object)

Language Tips on Interrogative Pronouns 5 min

Interrogative pronouns can also be used as other parts of speech, such as interrogative adjectives or other types of pronouns. Examples:

What sandwich do you want? (interrogative adjective)

The person who is coming is my manager. (relative pronoun)

Sometimes we use ‘who’ instead of ‘whom’. The correct and formal way is ‘whom’. Examples:

Whom did you speak to? (formal)

Who did you speak to? (informal)
