(a) Define the following terms: (8 Marks) Phase Alloy Substitutional solid solution Interstitial Solid Solution
(b) For a 40%wt Sn-60%wtPb alloy shown in Fig Q at 150oC What phases are present? (2 marks) What are the composition of the phases? (4 Marks) Calculate the mass fraction. (4 Marks)
(c) A Cu-Ni alloy that is subjected to “NON-EQUILIBRIUM” cooling may have a CORED structure, Explain what this means. (8 Marks)
(d) The modulus of Elasticity, E (Young’s Modulus) is a property for a material, explain the meaning of this property. ( 7 Marks)
(a) Describe the microstructure for EACH of the following plain carbon steels:
0.8% Carbon steel cooled slowly from 800oC to room temperature (3 Marks) 0.4% Carbon cooled slowly from 900oC (3 Marks) 1.0% carbon heated to 900oC and quench in Water (3 Marks) 1.0% carbon heated to 900oC quench in water, re heated to 400oC for an hour and allowed to cool in air (3 Marks)
Comment on the expected hardness of each of the above, after the heat treatment. (4 Marks)
(b) Define the term HARDENABILITY. (6 Marks)
(c) Using diagrams as appropriate, write a brief note on the “Jominy End-Quench Test”. Explain the purpose of the test, and the information obtained from it. (11 Marks)
