Introduction

  • The process of a statistical research study is the means of gathering, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • The purpose of a statistical research study is to answer some question.
  • Although, you may never conduct a statistical research study, you will likely read about a statistical research study in a professional journal or hear of one on the news. YOU will have to decide the validity of the researcher’s answer to the question asked.
  • Knowing how to design a good research study will help you in this decision-making process

STATISTICAL RESEARCH PROCESS

  • STEP 1 : State the question clearly with as much detail as possible.
    • Details help to provide context to the statistical study
    • Think: “Who, where, what, when, and why?”
  • STEP 2: Identify the variable, population, sample, and sampling method - What type variable is being used? ---this determines what statistical analyses can be used - Is the sample random and representative of population? - Ideally sample is 5% of population ---small sample is any group less than 30, large sample is any group of 30 or more

STATISTICAL RESEARCH PROCESS

  • STEP 3: Collect the data
    • Called “raw data” --just lists of responses
  • STEP 4: Organize the data
  • This is the focus of Module Two, Lesson One
  • STEP 5: Analyze the data
  • This is the focus of Module Two, Lessons Two, Three, and Four
