History: Punctuation word is derived from Latin word "Punctus" that means Point. Upto 16th century the subject was known in English as Pointing and puctuation was introduced in the Middle of 16th century. Basic Puctuation Rules: Full Stop: Use a full stop to end a statement, mild command, indirect question and after most abbreviations. Examples: He arrived on time Sit up straight He ofen thinks whether he would attain his goal are not. Question Mark: It is used at the at the end of Direct Question. examples:

Colon: It is used to call attention to the words following it and to present a list. Example: Two major types of organisms are: eukaryotes and prokeryotes. I need several things from Store: eggs, milk, and bread. Apostrophe: It is used to show possession and to make contractions. Examples: Boy' hat, Men'coats and Girl' flowers etc. aren't, can't, and didn't etc. Quotation Mark: It is used to present quotations and titles of short works. Examples:

" Shoot for the Moon even if you miss you'll land among the stars." The story "Mother and Child" is written by Hira. Comma: It is used to seperate items written in series, before coordinating conjunction joining independent clauses, to seperate items in date, before the text of quotations and after salutation. Examples: We bought eggs, breads, jam and milk etc. I didn't have good time on myvocations, so i would go some other place next time. He went there on Monday, May 11, 1997. The teacher said,"slow and steady wins the race." Dear sir, Dear mam, and Dear sir etc. Parentheses: These are used to add extra information in a text.
