2 nd^ Medication Check

Prepare Medications for Administration

  1. Right medication
  2. Right dose
  3. Right time
  4. Right route
  5. Right patient
  6. Right documentation Check expiration dates Draw up medications
  7. IV Push
  8. Clean the vial with an alcohol pad 30 seconds
  9. Connect needle and syringe
  • Pull the syringe back with the amount of air for the solution
  • Inject the air into the vial
  • Invert the vial
  • Withdrawl the amount of medication ordered
  1. Use the safety device for the needle
  2. Label the medication with: Name, mg/ml, Date, Time Intravenous

  8. Explain the medication: o Why is medication giveno How long it will take to be effective o Nursing considerations o Safety o Contraindications
  9. Hand sanitizer
  10. Place on clean gloves
  11. Remove NS flush
  12. Attach medication and administer
  13. Flush the IC line with 1-3 cc NS afterwards

  8. The prescribed medication is compatible with continuous IVF
  9. Connect IV solution (medication) to IV secondary tubing
  10. Slide roller clamp 2 inches below the drip chamber and roll the clamp closed
  11. Pull off the cover from the port on the IV medication
  12. Insert the spike into the port using a sterile technique
  13. Squeeze the drip chamber and fill half-full
  14. Prime the tubing with solution
  15. Remove cap on the end of the tubing (maintain sterility)
  16. Slowly open the clamp
  17. Prime the tubing with solution
  18. Replace cap on tubing
  19. Clean the injection port with alcohol swab for 30 seconds
  20. Connect IVP tubing to maintenance IV tubing

Post-procedure

Ask Pain level Can I get you anything before I leave Perform 1. Lower the bed to the lowest position

  1. Ensure 3 side rales are up
  2. Put the call bell within reach
  3. Perform Hand hygiene Say Let the patient know when you will be back I am going to document the medication administration
