What are some current news examples?

  • Austin Collie (Indianapolis Colts football player) Concussion. What is his future in football? - This is an example of a local story, that may get national attention in the sports world, but gets front page attention in Indianapolis everyday - Why is this story news?

    • This is an example of a national story that hits many different categories of news
    • Why is this story news?

  • This is important because 2012 is a Presidential Election year and the Convention is and will be extremely popular and heavily broadcasted

It is an event that brings up memories and tragedies of Hurricane Katrina

■ Hurricane Isaac is expected to hit land harder than Hurricane Katrina did

  • Hurricane Katrina was a 2005 hurricane that destroyed the land and homes in the southern state of Louisiana
  • A repeat of the destruction that Katrina left is terrifying and measures are being taken to avoid this

It impacts a large group of people in a broad area/ Demands Attention

  • A disaster like a hurricane will affect the rest of the United States with a rise in gas and food prices\

There are seven different values that make news

7 News Values:

  1. Impact

1.b. The more impact it has, the bigger the story

  1. Timeliness/Immediacy

1.d. Unless it has a huge impact that will last, it will be current info

  1. Prominence

1.e. Important/newsworthy people makes news

  1. Proximity

1.f. The closer it is to you, the bigger the story
