Pressure Gauge Calibration on Air Pumps: Lab Experiment for Mech Eng Students, Lab Reports of Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation

The procedure for calibrating pressure gauges on air pumps in a laboratory setting for Mechanical Engineering students. The experiment involves identifying the importance of calibration, describing the calibration process, and practicing professional work ethics. Students will learn how to adjust the calibration screw, open the protective glass, and compare readings with a calibrated gauge.

Experiment No. 1
CALIBRATION OF PRESSURE GAUGE ON AIR PUM
Course Code: ME 401 Program: BS Mechanical Engineering
Course Title: ME Laboratory 1 Date Performed: March 24, 2021
Section: ME41S1 Date Submitted: March 29, 2021
Students: Instructor: Engr. Angela May D. Flores
1. Divinagracia, John David B.
2. Dela Cruz, Allhen
3. Barrios, Joshua Noel
4. Calderon, Liz Camille
5. Perez, Angelo Carl T.
6. Rosales Jr., Rolando A.
1. Objective:
To fix and calibrate the pressure gauge on bike pumps.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
The students shall be able to:
2.1 Identify the importance of calibrating the pressure gauge
2.2 Describe the procedure in calibrating pressure gauge on bike pumps
2.3 Develop professional work ethics, including precision, neatness, safety and ability to follow
instruction.
3. Discussion:
Pressure gauge calibration is one of the simplest calibration procedures. Pressure gauges are pressure
indicating instruments. Normally pressure gauges consist of bourdon tubes as pressure sensing elements.
Here are different ways to calibrate different kinds of pressure gauges:
1. Adjusting the screw located inside the pressure gauge mechanism.
In some gauges manufactures provide the calibration screw in the dial pad (as you can see in the below fig.
Near to the pointer) adjust that screw to calibrate.

Discussion: Pressure gauge calibration is one of the simplest calibration procedures. Pressure gauges are pressure indicating instruments. Normally pressure gauges consist of bourdon tubes as pressure sensing elements. Here are different ways to calibrate different kinds of pressure gauges:
  7. Adjusting the screw located inside the pressure gauge mechanism. In some gauges manufactures provide the calibration screw in the dial pad (as you can see in the below fig. Near to the pointer) adjust that screw to calibrate.
  1. Adjusting the screw located at the gauge needle pointer itself. Some gauge manufactures provide calibrating screw in the pointer. Adjust the screw to calibrate.
  2. Opening the Pressure Gauge Protective Glass (or plastic cover) then removing the needle. Open the protective glass of pressure gauge to calibrate and adjust zero and span. Opening the glass by flat-head screwdriver. Using needle puller pull the needle and adjust to 0 psi and span by applying pressure by hand held test pump or by any other means. 4. Materials and Equipment:  Air pump with pressure gauge  Flat-head Screwdriver 5. Procedure:

I therefore conclude that calibrating pressure gauge on air pumps is easy and important. It is very easy because you just need to disassemble, reattach the pointer or rotate the screw of the arm (if there’s any) to adjust it to zero, return the plastic cover and the bezel, and compare it to the calibrated pressure gauge. It is very important to calibrate the pressure gauge on air pumps because it can prevent exploded tires due to over-inflation and exploded basketball due to excessive air inside. Who knows, maybe our lives we’re already saved by a calibrated pressure gauge so maintain calibrating your pressure gauges every week. Prevention is better than cure so avoid keeping your pressure gauge on hot, humid, wet, and/or dusty places because at some point it will affect its accuracy. Keep your pressure gauges calibrated because calibrated pressure gauge saves lives. -Divinagracia, John David B. After the experiment, I conclude that any troubleshooting exercise must be undertaken. Excellent observation is necessary in all such endeavors to avoid the failure of pressure gage in terms of its accuracy. -Rosales Jr, Rolando A. In this experiment, I therefore conclude that daily or weekly checking is a must. Measuring pressure gauges on air pump could be part of our daily life specially when we are using it on a bicycle, ball or anything that needs air. Procedure or observation is needed to have accurate pressure gauges and to keep away from failures we should be marvelous in calibrating it. -Calderon, Liz Camille In this experiment observation is a must because we need to have an accurate gauge also it is a big help to us because when we're using a thing with an air for example a car the tire of it, it can help us to ensure to have the accurate readings needed to meet quality, safety, and compliance standards. a pressure gauge will always have some friction in its movement, and may change its behavior over time, therefore you should exercise it before calibration. -Perez, Angelo Carl T. In this experiment, Pressure gauges are crucial components of most processing systems. In these environments, a pressure gauge needs to be reliable, accurate and easy to read to help prevent failure in everyday operations. Therefore, how a gauge is constructed and tested is extremely important for reliability, safety and peace-of-mind. -Dela Cruz, Allhen E. I therefore conclude that calibrating the pressure gauge of an air pump would give an overall good result but there are many effects that could change or decrease the accuracy of the gauge. To ensure proper calibration, measurement tools must have a reliable system setup that does not contain errors to the device. -Barrios, Joshua
