BAE 200 Lab Practical Examination Study Guide - Prof. Mr Burchell, Lab Reports of Agricultural engineering

A study guide for a lab practical examination focused on solving engineering problems using matlab, tksolver, and excel 2007. The exam is worth 15% of the final grade and covers topics such as engineering problem solving, good programming techniques, matlab functions, user defined functions, logical and conditional statements, looping, equation solving, list solving, data filtering, sorting, and basic functions and statistics. The exam is open book and open note, but electronic copies of homework and class examples are not permitted. Students are encouraged to study old homework and solutions, work examples and problems in the book, and practice using the software packages covered in the exam.

BAE 200 Lab Practical Study Guide (Test date: December 2, 2008)
The purpose of the lab practical examination is to assess your ability to solve basic engineering
problems using MATLAB, TKSolver and EXCEL 2007 in an efficient and accurate manner.
You will be asked to solve a series of problems during the 1 hour 50 minute laboratory session.
This Lab Practical is worth 15% of your final grade and cannot be replaced by the final exam!
Rules:
-This will be an Open Book - Open Note Test
-Print-outs of homeworks and examples are permitted
-Electronic copies of homework, class examples, etc. are NOT permitted. Use of electronic
versions of programs will result in an automatic ZERO for the lab practical and will be
considered under the University academic misconduct rules
For all software packages covered (MATLAB, TKSolver, and EXCEL 2007) you should be
able to solve problems using
¾ 6-steps in Engineering Problem Solving
¾ Good programming techniques recommended (problem statements, comments, units,
assumptions, governing equations, etc.)
¾ MATLAB functions and user defined functions
¾ User defined input
¾ Logical and conditional statements
¾ Concepts of looping (MATLAB only)
¾ Equation solving, List solving (TKSolver only), and Iteration
¾ Data filtering, sorting, basic functions and statistics (Excel 2007)
Once you arrive at a solution, you should be able to present output generated by your
software in a clear manner by:
¾ Producing formatted output or tables (eg. disp, fprintf in MATLAB)
¾ Producing formatted plots (all software) or subplots (MATLAB only)
¾ Reporting answers in appropriate units and significant figures
STUDY HINTS:
¾ Study old homework and solutions in Common Locker
¾ Work examples and problems in book to increase efficiency. Particularly
o Chapters 6-9 – Engineering Analysis and MATLAB 7
o Chapters 2-4, 9 – Engineering with Excel
