Section A

Q1. A coil of 0.2H inductance and negligible resistance is connected in series with a 50 Ω resistor to a 230 volt, 50 Hertz supply. Calculate for the circuit (a) inductive reactance ( 4 Marks) (b) impedance ( 4 Marks) (c) current ( 3 Marks) (d) power factor ( 3 Marks) (e) phase angle between supply voltage and current ( 3 Marks) (f) power consumed ( 4 Marks) (g)draw the impedance triangle. ( 4 Marks)

Q2. An 80 ohm resistor and a 50 microfarad capacitor are connected in parallel across a 230 volt 50 Hertz supply.

(a)Draw a neat labelled diagram of the circuit. ( 3 Marks) Calculate: (b) the capacitive reactance of the capacitor ( 3 Marks) (c) the current in the capacitor ( 2 Marks) (d) the current in the resistor ( 2 Marks) (e) the total current ( 4 Marks) (f) the circuit power factor ( 3 Marks) the total power consumed by the circuit. ( 3 Marks)

Q3. An induction motor takes a current of 10Amps at 0.7 P.F. lagging from a 240 volt,

50 Hz supply. A is capacitor connected in parallel with the motor to improve the overall

P.F. to 0.95 lagging..

Draw the phasor diagram to scale and determine:

(a) the current taken by the capacitor (8 Marks)

(b) the current taken from the supply with capacitor in circuit. (8 Mark)

(c) calculate the capacitance of the capacitor (9 Marks)
